I almost hope they do blow the season just for the lolz. White Goose's scenario one time.

Disclaimer - Jaded leaf fan. No season just means less pain. And that can be pretty much said if there is never any more NHL. Yeah, jaded. LOL

hey guys, if one of the following trophies had to be sponsored (as in the Sprint Cup, it would cease its original name) which one would you choose?

if one of the trophies was going to be spared from the sponsorship, but the rest of would adopt another name, which one would you choose now?

The FIFA World Cup already has a corporate sponsor: FIFA.

Pretty sure they're both just waiting to see which side blinks first before ultimately getting this thing done sometime next week. They're prob playing Go Fish w/ the mediators right now.
It's not even $5M worth of cap - I mean it is - but in real dollars it means nothing. The only dollars they are fighting over are pensions. I just can't believe the league is going to drag it out this long, but they are.

I get this point, but can you expand on this whole thing a bit?

Why are the owners taking such a hard stance for a 60m cap? Doesn't that hurt the big market owners? Is this one of those things that Bettman is standing firm on for the sake of his small market disasters like Columbus and Phoenix while guys like Jacobs, Burkle and Tanenbaum could care less if the cap is 65m?

They probably want a $60M cap because third contracts will cost more per year with the new contract limits. They prolly don't want spending to get out of hand.

well i mean there are 16 teams over $60m right now, so it's not just about the big boys. Edmonton, Tampa, probably Buffalo (Pegula will get sick of it eventually i think), Calgary, & Minnesota, etc would probably like to be prevented from spending that much. hell, even the big boys like it bc it's basically FREE MONEY to them. the Leafs will always spend to whatever the cap is, and it's not like their revenues are changing unless they make the playoffs.

I assumed the FIFA one had a fancy name like most trophies (Stanley Cup, Vince Lombardi Trophy, etc)...but it's just named after the tournament? That's weak, def put some sponsorship on that bitch if they can't come up with anything more creative.

IIRC, in the 5 minutes I've actually spent reading about this lockout recently, the players proposed 65 with the other 5 coming out of their escrow in the event monetary goals aren't reached.

It's got nothing on the Jules Rimet trophy

From wikipedia:
During World War II, the trophy was held by 1938 winners Italy. Ottorino Barassi, the Italian vice-president of FIFA and president of FIGC, secretly transported the trophy from a bank in Rome and hid it in a shoe-box under his bed to prevent the Nazis from taking it.[2]

On 20 March 1966, four months before the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, the trophy was stolen during a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall.[3] The trophy was found just seven days later wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge in Upper Norwood, South London, by a dog named Pickles.
...
The Brazilian team won the tournament for the third time in 1970, allowing them to keep the real trophy in perpetuity, as had been stipulated by Jules Rimet in 1930.[6] It was put on display at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro in a cabinet with a front of bullet-proof glass.

On 19 December 1983, the wooden rear of the cabinet was pried open with a crowbar and the cup was stolen again.[7] Four men were tried and convicted in absentia for the crime.[8] The trophy has never been recovered.

My guess is that the NHL sees 60M as the 'true' cap - the NHLPA kept voting for a 5% cap inflator every year. The 60M cap is based on last year's revenues averaged for 50% + whatever % of make whole the players are getting, and without that pesky cap inflator that's been driving floor teams nuts.

The big market teams want more, but I think the mid markets and small markets would like this scenario to play out: If more mid markets and small markets make the playoffs, that drives revenue down-ish, enough to where the cap doesn't float away like an untended helium balloon again. I think it's doomed to fail and they should lower the floor + increase the midpoint but I think 1: small market teams want to compete too, they'd see that as anti-competitive and 2: the scenario i outlined before, the more small markets make the playoffs, the lower revenues are and that has a recursive effect on the salary cap in the next season etc.

Me, I'd try to work something out whereby the floor can only increase by X% + the percentage by which the lowest 10 teams revenues grew at during that year, less revenues that are league-wide (i.e. for television contracts) or something like that.

In a sense both Lord Stanley and Lord Grey were sponsors, just like AVCO.
