Pierre's knowledge dropping is obnoxious. He shoehorns. He's a color guy, tell me about the game. Emrick's job as a broadcaster is partly as a storyteller, tell the story of the game - rarely is he throwing in a reference to minor league hockey unless there's a brawl or the game is mostly out of reach.

I understand why both do it - hockey's story doesn't begin and end at the NHL level, but for a lot of American fans, they believe it does. The closest reasonably high level hockey to New York City right now is either Yale University or the ECHL Trenton Titans. Well, okay, I don't know why Pierre does it, as he's been broadcasting in Canada for ages and does the same nonsense there.

Triumph, Bridgeport CT of the AHL is closer to most of NYC than Yale or Trenton.

It doesn't bother me as a Canadian when NFL commentators bring up specific college games from NCAA schools I've never heard of. If the stories relevant, it's relevant. Pierre's stories aren't always relevant, but I still like the random facts here and there.

here and there yeah, but no one needs to hear who scouted, the name of parents, junior coach, etc of like a dozen players per game. i don't know if he's doing it to show off that he knows everyone and everything, or bc he thinks the people get something out of being name-dropped on TV, but comes across as pretty annoying, obnoxious, & unimportant to most i think.

and we get it, EVERY CHL/NCAA Coach is doing an amazing job running a great program...

Today, we met with the NHL off and on over several hours. A number of matters were discussed, including our proposal for a new pension plan, revenue sharing, the players’ share and salary cap issues, and the owners’ “make whole” concept. Present today were Chris Campoli, Mathieu Darche, Ron Hainsey, Johan Hedberg, Manny Malhotra, and Kevin Westgarth (David Backes was present for part of the day), as well as Mathieu Schneider, Joe Reekie, Steve Webb and Rob Zamuner.
No way that Zamuner should make this team.

Peehs maybe next week, need to find some time. Anyone have tabulating software for that ****?

TR: Probably first time I've been drunk in over 10 years. Had about 3/4 of a 26'er of gin.

Feeling good.

Multiple sources confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com that the league's offer of $211 million was seen as not even close to what the NHLPA seeks to guarantee existing contracts, believed to be approximately $590 million.
So if these reports are true, they're really squabbling/stalling bargaining again over $379m, which would essentially be like 4% of the total revenue pie over each of the next 3 yrs? (And that's assuming almost no growth). I realize there's other issues but this is the main sticking point by all accounts, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Pretty shameful if they don't get something done in the next two weeks.

Yeah, there's a balanace that needs to be struck. Personally, I think mike Emrick does that a bit more than he should as well. But for Pierre, he's obviously been told to keep doing what he's doing. And they absolutely want him to say positive things and present hockey in that kind of positive light.

But if that many people are put off by it then adjustment should be considered even if Emrick and their producers are all, "hey, that tidbit really added to the broadcast." Listen to your fans some too. You can't listen to every criticism though or you'll go crazy. But if enough want higher quality content without as much trivia then consider it.

I actually like Pierre. Especially when he's evaluating what he sees on the ice or hears or sees in the benches. I think some of that content and how well he presents it is really terrific. Very enthusiastic and just good insight a lot of times. But it is clear that many would prefer he dial down the frequent Moose Jaw, Yellow Lake, Saskatoon, and Chicoutimi references.

"Whether it's people not actually physically going to the venues and consuming there, consuming in venues around the outlet before that, or indeed having NHL sort of parties at home, all of those occasions have disappeared off the map and you just can't replicate them," CEO Peter Swinburn said in an interview Wednesday.

WTF? No reference to a clearly more important factor in the sales downturn.
