Webaaaaaaahhh scored a PP goal for my team too. Waiting for Couture to play his first game most likely on tuesday. That being said:

Dear NHL, please stop being *******s, get back to work and bring Nash/Thornton home or we might aswell give Davos the cup right now.

Thanks,

It's not that bad of an analogy. Distribution of revenues is an intricate issue.
Its very hard to assess the starting point of any distribution.

Who's capital is at risk, who undertakes risk of loss, who provides the entertainment factor, how much are each of those things worth? Whats a fair share? On what basis?

Thornton and Nash probably don't want to leave. I heard from someone who knows one of their agents (forget if it was Nash's or Thornton's) that SJ was Nash's first choice, so he could play with Joe, but Doug Wilson was apparently never even remotely interested in making a deal for him. Now that they're together in Switzerland they're prob having the time of their lives!

Yeah I was actually gonna post that if the rangers or sharks had enough cap and the possibility to make the move, those two would make a hell of a duo. Was already the case in 04-05.

Davos lost their first 3 games this season, before winning... 9-2 tonight with Nash and Thornton in their line-up for the first time. Smells 05 all over again when they destroyed the play-off and won the cup

Sadly for me

Really hope Couture is gonna deliver for us

You can forget about the nice salary. The average player makes like 200k/year here, the good ones make 500k, and a very few "stars" make up to 1M. Hell, Spezza is gonna play for free. His club in Switzerland will pay for his insurance, house, a car to use, stuff like that but that's it. No salary per se.

There are top players such as Crosby that won't play here because there is no club to even afford insurance. Let alone salary.

NHL players are really happy to play over here because life in Switzerland is good and because our league is probably the best one after NHL/KHL, but they're definitely not making money. It's just their best, and most enjoyable way to stay in shape till the NHL cuts the bull****.

yeah Crosby is a special case tho, don't know if he can even get insured over here. (anyone know if his new deal is even partially insured, maybe everything but concussions or something? idk)

If Sidney Crosby wants to play overseas during the lockout, it’s going to take a lot of cash.

According to agent Pat Brisson (who appeared on Sportsnet’s Fan590 Wednesday), the amount of money to insure Crosby’s contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins could be staggering — up to $400,000 per month.

Oh, and Brisson says that’s only to cover part of the deal.

Crosby inked a 12-year, $104.4 million extension with the Penguins at the end of June, the largest payout in franchise history. The deal was huge, but became even larger in scope given Crosby’s concussion history and the fact he’s missed 101 games over the last two seasons.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...000-per-month/

so yeah, he's prob not gonna be playing anywhere during the lockout...

oh and re: CBA negotiations

some super rough calculations i ran...

HRR was around $3.3b last year, which at 57% for the players meant about $62.7m in player spending per team. the cap was a little higher than that, so i guess there is some accounting for the fact that not all teams will spend to the cap? (in which case if too many aren't near the cap there must be some escrow money going to the players at the end of the year? but then again i thought the players have been kicking back escrow money the last couple years?)

anyway, the projections had revenue going up, bc the cap was projected at $54.2-$70.2m (floor / ceiling, average of $62.2m, or higher? anyone know how they calculate it exactly?).

but based on last year's revenue, here's how things would shake out:

$57.2m team average @ 52% players' share
$55m team average @ 50% players' share
$47.3m team average @ 43% players' share

so if the owners are serious about fighting for something close to that 57% number for themselves, yeah we could be in for trouble. that's roughly $15m per owner, per season, or $450m total per season (and about $2.25b over a 5 year agreement).

wonder if a deal could be done by now if the owners were just asking for like 50-52% (which would put the deal in line with the recent agreements in the NBA & NFL), combined with some kind of soft-cap / luxury tax + revenue sharing program to help the poor teams, that actually address the nature and needs of this league. (unless the current revenue sharing program is already sufficient, but i kinda doubt it)

of course the cynic in me says that the owners will just use their leverage and lean on the players in an effort to squeeze out every last dime, and just like last time we might lose the season over it. most of the owners won't care anyway if they're losing money by the league running. though i hope the rich clubs get pissy and force something to happen given some of them are missing out on A LOT of money by not playing. but then again i'm sure they're fully aware that every % they win is just more money in their pocket too, especially if we're talking about a 5-10 year agreement for some short-term pain.

imo they're not playing until ~December at the earliest.

HRR/30 * .57 sets the salary midpoint, above and below which the cap and floor are set.

I still think they are playing in January. Yes, the owners are going to try to squeeze out every dime, but they would take a very serious risk with another full-season lockout. Most of the league isn't in Canada. Most of the NHL revenue comes from the gate. Yes, everyone came back last time. That's because everyone thought the lockout was the right move. I don't think people think that now, it's a different economy, it's a different mentality, and I can't imagine the owners will send it all off the cliff. It's going to make too much sense to compromise.

friend of mine works the US/Can border. David Clarkson went through the other day with apparently the sweetest truck my pal has ever seen. so he asked him what he does for a living and Clarkson said he plays for the Devils. they chatted for 5 minutes and Clarkson said he doesn't think they'll be playing anytime soon.

spent a little time with a fringe NHLer a few weeks back, he got a little salty when some of us started talking hockey / lockout, wasn't sure if serious or not so i didn't press the subject at all. also he's not a fan of Gary Bettman, had sort of a Chelios-esque approach to matters
