BUTLERRRRRRRRRR

I mean, I don't think Wideman is all that bad, it's just a horrible contract. Wideman can play average competition to even. He'll be better than Scott Hannan. Maybe he'll help the power play. And yeah I guess Calgary has to spend that money on someone. But still.

The Sharks have had plenty of AIDSy moments, but I take some solace that they aren't actively trying to get worse on a regular basis.

My condolences GL.

He'll definitely help the powerplay, which has been absolutely abysmal over the last few seasons. But that contract, dear God. Calgary once again negotiates against themselves, and loses. NO ONE was offering Wideman $26 mil over 5 years, even in this market.

This was my kid brother's take, who is a legendary optimist and diehard Leafs fan (he's in the fistpump gif), but a very rational kid nonetheless; he played junior so he likes to give players the benefit of the doubt and doesn't go out of his way to chirp guys incessantly. Anyways:

But I have to say, if you were going to pay that much anyways, they probably just threw away a 5th and a potential roster player... because I have to think that offer would have been one of the highest submitted to Wideman even on or after July 1.
What's frustrating to me is that this was the time to let T.J. Brodie start to take over that role organically, at 1/5th of the price.

Wouldn't it be great if after all these years, Iginla was the one making the final decision on all personnel decisions in Calgary.

Iginla's been known to get involved in the recruiting process. It was well-known he was not only on board with the Bertuzzi signing in '08, but he went to speak with him as UFA started and convinced Darryl it would be a good fit; they played together at Torino in '06.

Iginla was a major player in bringing back Tanguay, he also pushed hard in trying to bring back Marc Savard before he signed for Boston and Cammalleri said Jarome had him nearly convinced to stay with the Flames in '09, except for the fact that Darryl had no money to put together a real offer after acquiring Jokinen.

Speaking of avatars, it was time to bring back Buscemi, and also include the details of the contract I reasonably could've expected from the Flames had they seen me play high school back in the day.

Come to think of it, at least overpaying for Wideman means we won't overpay for Kubina on Sunday, and I was legitimately terrified that would happen, given the TB '04 Cup connection.

I was flying WestJet into Vegas and saw buscemi wedding singer scene about to start on my neighbours screen. I instantly unplugged my headphones from my iPod and changed the channel just in time, only to have the pilot make a meaningless announcement in two languages.

Can anyone who knows hockey better than I do (which is most of you) please give me a rundown of the Predators offseason.

How well did we draft?
How good are our chances of resigning Sutter?

Thanks

I forgot how solid his '08-09 season was with Boston. Pretty sure he had the Chara pairing that year though. But by his end at Boston, he was getting booed mercilessly, he was just god awful. But I thought I remember him being decent in the first half of last season for Washington. It's almost like he has this honeymoon phase with each new team but his AIDS invariably always rears its ugly head, most often during the crucial time of the year.
I thought Wideman was pretty decent before the ASB (how else would he get in?), but afterwards he was legitimately terrible. Him amd Schultz were turning the puck over and giving up multiple chances every time they were on the ice together. It really was a thing to behold. I wanted his head at the end, but it was Orlov that got benched. God why didnt gmgm listen to me and trade that dusty hack at the deadline? Aaaarrrggggggghhhhh

Pretty much anyone playing with Schultz is guarandamnteed to get scored on. That's not wideman's fault. He is certainly average or slightly below average who would look a lot worse if he had to play against the toughs, but he didn't. Carlson/Alzner did.

Then there's this mythical puck moving defenseman label that hasn't improved the caps PP one iota except for a short stretch in the beginning of last year. I think what's more telling is that Orlov apparently credited his improvement last year to help from hamrlik (who hardly played and looked *a lot* worse than his territorial metrics). If your one allstar offensive-D can't be an example to the young ones, that's kinda bad.

He's not terrible, but the caps could do a lot better (which they did with the trade). And so could the flames. That contract is just the icing on the cake. Holy hell, geddy might take up heroin by the end of it.
