Spoiler:
Followup: if that is true, do you think Sydney Crosby currently the clubhouse leader for the least valuable player in this year's playoffs? I.e. the Alexander Semin Trophy?
The only reason they suffered 2 of the 'blowouts' was the fact the Flyers scored 8 goals in those games. A team should win scoring 4 or 5 goals with a #1 goaltender. MAF played like ****; Orpik, Michalek, et. al. played worse than ****; the Flyers played to their absolute full potential. The perfect storm.

I would put Geno over Crosby for LVP.... getting shut down by a 19 year old and relegated to taking dumb penalties looks pretty bad for a regular season MVP.

Serious question - time for Pittsburgh to consider life after MAF?

man, Gillis is such a boss

"Stay Classy Vancouver" certainly applies here, doesn't it?

Because publicly tap dancing in the media after winning trades is always a great way to maintain amicable relationships with potential trading partners in the future.

I really enjoy when GMs are candid, but being candid seems real bad for business.

Oh, I certainly agree that being so forthright here is a bad strategy, but I can't help but smile when a GM openly admits something like this.

Dellow's point on this made me lol:

There's a difference between saying 'we won the trade' and saying what Gillis did. Gillis said he created a market for Hodgson, that's not to say Hodgson isn't going to be a very good NHL player.

i think the Hodgson situation is pretty unique in that there was a lot of bad blood between Cody and his camp and the Canucks coaching staff/management team. but yeah, i'd rather Gillis just keep quiet about stuff like this, especially if he wants to be able to repeat the trick again in the future (creating an inflated asset and selling high).

plus he's the same guy who keep buying garbage from the Florida Panthers, and continues to be the only guy in the world who comes out on the bottom of dealings with Dale [censored] Tallon... (also he might not have done all that well in getting Kassian/Gragnani)

what's the context to all this anyway, link?

Apparently Gillis was asked today about the trade, that was his answer.

The sad thing is that its not like the Nucks definitely won that trade, in the short term it looks like they lost it. Having Kassian and MAG sitting in the press box during the most important game of the season isn't a good look.

Roberto Luongo on waiving his no trade clause:

"I don't want to be that guy who stands in the way of anything."

Just about sums up his playoff goaltending performances

Luongo to Tampa for a draft pick and a mediocre contract?

The thing w/ Luongo, and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out, is I think he'll still fetch a decent return, but the problem is that most of the theoretically interested teams just can't afford that contract. Chicago, Edmonton, and Toronto are the only teams that need goalies that can afford that deal.

i disagree. it's like when i was spitballing where the market for Kipper is, if any, this summer (except Luongo has a smaller cap hit):

(barring expiring contracts, buyouts, rollbacks, trades, etc)

Minnesota - no
Florida - maybe
Phoenix - probably not
St. Louis - don't think so
Winnipeg - no according to the Jets fan 'round here
Ottawa - maybe?
Nashville - no
Carolina - no
Dallas - probably not
Colorado - probably not
New York I - yeah maybe

unless maybe they find a goalie for goalie trade somewhere...

Tampa - $61m (room if they don't bring Roloson back)
Columbus - $61m (Mason only has 1 year left after this)
New Jersey - $62m (room if Broduer retires)
San Jose - $61m (room if they swap Niemi prob)
Chicago - $60m (room if they swap Crawford prob)

yeah lots of teams could probably make it work if they wanted to...
if you're saying that the market is smaller bc of the salary & number of years remaining on the contract, then maybe. but all that requires is a motivated owner willing to sign off on the thing, and there are probably more of those around than you might think.

he's not going to Chicago, and i'd be surprised if he went in the division to Edmonton. really i think he'll move out east somewhere, maybe to Toronto, maybe back to one of the Florida teams, maybe the NYI or NJ? idk...

but it's pretty tough to speculate about any of this until we see the new CBA obviously.

I don't really see any comparison between the theoretical markets for Kipper and Luongo. Kipper has 2 more years (combined salary of $6.5m), Luongo has 10 years and ~$47m left, there is no comparison there.

re: those EC teams

NJ is in a world of hurt financially, t can obviously speak on greater authority here, but I'd be shocked if they were players. Does he even waive for the Islanders? I guess Florida is an option, but again, taking on a 10 year deal with $47m remaining is tough for a floor team.

Tampa is an option, though I'm still skeptical about their willingness to take on such a big deal. But in the end you're probably right that Toronto is the likely destination.

I may have been unclear earlier - there certainly is no way he's moved to Chicago or Edmonton, I was just listing them as teams that fit both criteria of needing a goalie and an ownership willing to $pend.

KEITH AND SHARP TO THE WORLDS

YES

GOCB

WIM

Unlike Crosby who thinks he is too good for the World Championships.

Seriously, gotta love the guys like Sharpie, Perry, Getzlaf, who just dgaf and want to play puck. They're such hockey guys and just love to play the game. Perry especially. He went to the Worlds same year as the Olympics. What a Canadian hero
