I was one of Kaep's biggest proponents in the Alex/Kaep thread and now I desperately want him to fail. Not looking forward to hating this season, but sometimes you gotta do God's work.

Kaep was 27/39 for 412 yards through the air, 3 tds and 22 yards on the ground. Luck was 18/23 for 178 yards, 2tds through the air 1 through the ground, 38 yards rushing. Yet Fox picked Luck over Kaep as the player of the day. I'm confused. Luck also played the LOL-Aiders.

luck is the anointed king. they frame the story to fit the mold

kaepernick was objectively better on every measurable level but unless luck retires in the next 3 years he'll never be regarded as "better" than luck

Luck looked great but Kaep had an even better day. Fox's broadcasting day was done before Kaep played, so they picked Luck. I like how this little mini discussion started with a guy who "looked vulnerable" but won Fox's player of the week after his 8th 4th quarter comeback in a year. Some elite NFL commentary.

Kaep/Luck
RW
RG3

Think both Kaep and Luck have non-trivial GOAT equity (Luck's still higher than Kaepernick's). Very worried about how the Colts' coaching and FO is going to affect that equity though.

If Kaep crushes at the Clink this weekend it's gonna be real hard not to bend the knee. But if he looks like a frightened squirrel while Russell smoothly dismantles the Niners (the null hypothesis), it's much closer.

Kaep's still in the GOAT situation for the next few years, but yeah he beasted way harder than any of these guys week 1.

For Kaep I'm worried about how much $$$ he and Aldon are going to ask for. Both those issues will decide whether the team can remain relevant long term or not. Obviously drafting well with also be the key and churning over guys like Whitner, Gore, Crabtree (possibly), Boldin (maybe not), Goodwin (old as ****), Justin (we need em or a replacement), Rogers and a few others.

Keeping the OL in tact in the key. Not really worried about WRs anymore (CK will make em great if they are good). RBs are a dime a dozen and we have a few good ones as well. I think the key will be turning over much of the D and replacing Justin long term will make or break CK being in an ideal situation.

capone,

is J Smith really that important to the defense? I know he beasted it the last few seasons, but it seems like a position where if they get an average replacement it should be fine. Didn't they do pretty well without him due to the triceps injury?

Um, they made the SB but the team went from giving up like 13-14 a game to giving up the following points post injury.

Pats-34
Hawks-42
Cards-13
Packers-31
Falcons-24
Ravens-34

So almost 29.6 points per game. Obviously, we played some pretty elite offenses and playoff teams. Aldon was also hurt. The problem the 9ers have is they rush 4 almost every down so if Justin isn't 100%, we don't blitz so there is no pass rush. It's one issue I have with Fangio, despite our stacked LB core, we hardly blitz so Justin is very important with our current system. Maybe things will change when Justin leaves but they didn't really change things when he got hurt last year. It's a mistake IMO, even though the results oriented approach would say it was okay when clearly they struggled with him and Aldon injured.
