I play beer league and there's quite a few goalies that we play with that could make a few saves and not look extremely out of place in a NHL game (probably have save percentages >.800) Once got a division 1 college goalie for a summer game and it was kind of ridiculous the saves he was making, he could probably have had a >.900 save percentage in the NHL. Our team was getting dominated the whole game and he probably faced 8+ breakaways and another 10+ 2 or 3 on 1s, let in 3 goals and they were all tip shots and traffic rebounds. Any standard goalie would have given up way more than 10 in that game.

My girlfriend's friend's brother is often the emergency backup for the Leafs and played competitive university hockey so why can't Chicago get the starter from Northwestern or whatever?

great "oral history" of that night

He was their fourth goalie...the third guy was a minor league player who was called up that day to back-up the 2nd goalie - but the 2nd goalie got hurt in warm-ups...so the minor league made his first NHL start that night. Then in the 2nd period, the minor league guy cramped up and finall left with 14 minutes to go in the game.

So it would've been a great story even if just the minor league guy played the whole game...
