....................
we were playing playground basketball in Maryland just outside of DC in the early '70s during the summer - a well known outdoor court that was very competitive - and guess who shows up to play with us
two weekends in a row
believe it or not.................
Elgin Baylor
Baylor was from DC; Spingarn H.S.
Baylor was one of, if not the first, originator of the high flying hanging in the air double pump moves - Dr. J has credited with him for being his inspiration
to give an idea of how great Baylor was:
in the '61/'62 season he with the Lakers he
averaged 38 points and
19 rebounds per game
in that same season he had
61 points against the Celtics in a Championship Series game despite the fact that the Celtics were universally regarded as
the best defensive team in the NBA. He was guarded by Tom Sanders who was considered to be one of the NBAs best defensive forwards.
