....................

we were playing playground basketball in Maryland just outside of DC in the early '70s during the summer - a well known outdoor court that was very competitive - and guess who shows up to play with us two weekends in a row

believe it or not.................Elgin Baylor

Baylor was from DC; Spingarn H.S.

Baylor was one of, if not the first, originator of the high flying hanging in the air double pump moves - Dr. J has credited with him for being his inspiration

to give an idea of how great Baylor was:

in the '61/'62 season he with the Lakers he averaged 38 points and 19 rebounds per game

in that same season he had 61 points against the Celtics in a Championship Series game despite the fact that the Celtics were universally regarded as the best defensive team in the NBA. He was guarded by Tom Sanders who was considered to be one of the NBAs best defensive forwards.

He got in foul trouble in NCAA Finals against UK, game played in Louisville, KY. Might have changed the champion. Homerism and racism suspected. Highlight video shows one foul against him that was a joke, dude shoots fadeway, Elgin goes straight up nowhere near him ... foul.

thanks, I wasn't aware of that - I didn't know much about his college career
I watched the YT vid and it was quite enjoyable

I've searched but could not find any pictures or records of him in H.S. - Spingarn closed in 2013 - Spingarn also produced Dave Bing

I haven't yet tried the Washington Post archives - I will try that soon
