Australian Open PEEHS - Fortnight Down Under (Year 4) Australian Open PEEHS - Fortnight Down Under (Year 4)

01-13-2018 , 05:02 AM
Well it is that time of year again. We've just gotten the main draw for the most fun grand slam of the year. Let's all stay up late and hope this year's Melbourne commercial is a good one. And maybe hope for some good tennis as well.

We had 13 entries in 2015, won by kingweed
We had 16 entries in 2016, won by mw828
We had 19 entries in 2017, won by True North

Like last year I'm also going to play. I've already locked in my selections and can't change them (see end of post for details).

Research is allowed. This is for the Australian Open Men's and Women's Main Singles events (no juniors, doubles or wheelchair picks please). My apologies for all the small print but I don't want any pre-round withdrawals to give later entrants an unfair advantage.

WINNER
The winner is the person that scores the fewest points

SCORING
General rules copied from KrazyKris from NFL PEEHS.

This is PEEHS, so the winner (or winners) will have the lowest total score after all 16 questions have been revealed. And with PEEHS, you want to submit a correct answer that will be guessed by as few entrants as possible.

Correct answers are worth as many points as total people who have guessed that answer. The best score per question is 1 (an ace), which means you guessed a correct answer that nobody else guessed.

Incorrects will be scored the same as for the NFL PEEHS, that being (highest score for any answer) + (# of different correct answers submitted for that question). This is a change from last year... an incorrect answer can now be the SHEEP, just like in the NFL PEEHS.

ENTRIES
If you would like to play, please PM me a list of your answers. Make sure to answer all 16 questions. Please put either the full name (if necessary) or full last name on your list. This isn't an issue of me decoding your picks, it is just easier to process if the names are all the same format. I know most of you wont do this anyways but in case you are nice:

Example for question #1:

Quote:
1. Pete Sampras - Good
1. Sampras - Good
1. Pete - Bad
1. Pistol Pete - Bad
Entries close SUNDAY AT 4PM PST. Entries after that are not counted. This is based on 2+2 time of when I receive the PM.

Reveals at the end of each round.

QUESTIONS

Round 1:
1) MENS: Pick a player that will win and not have their serve broken in their first round match (If opponent withdraws before playing: scored as incorrect. If opponent withdraws mid-match: it could be correct.)
2) MENS: Pick a top-16 seed who will win in 4 or 5 sets in their first round match

3) WOMENS: Name a player who will win and give up at most 4 games to their opponent in their first round match (If opponent withdraws before playing: scored as incorrect. If opponent withdraws mid-match: it could be correct.)
4) WOMENS: Name a top-32 seed that will lose in their first round match (if player withdraws before playing: scored as incorrect, if player withdraws mid-match: scored as correct)

Round 2:
5) MENS: Name a top-32 seed who will lose in either round 1 or round 2 (must play at least one match in tournament - no withdraws before first round)
6) WOMENS: Name a player who didn't make the 3rd round last year who wins in round 2 this year

Round 3:
7) MENS: Name a player who didn't make it into the 4th round last year who wins their 3rd round match this year
8) WOMENS: Name a player who has made it into round 4 without losing a set

Round 4:
9) MENS: Name a player who won in round 4
10) WOMENS: Name a player who won in round 4

Quarters:
11) MENS: Name a player who has upset an opponent with a higher seed (see details below)
12) WOMENS: Name a player who has upset an opponent with a higher seed (see details below)

Details for #11 and #12: The upset must occur between round 1 and the end of the quarterfinals, upsets in the semis or finals don't count. "Higher seed" means lower seed number. IE a 12 seed beating a 5 seed would be an upset and qualify. A 5 seed beating a 12 seed would not qualify. An unseeded player beating any 1-32 seed qualifies. An unseeded player beating another unseeded player does not qualify. World ranking is irrelevant, only the Australian Open seed matter for this question.

Semis:
13) MENS: Name a player who is in the top 5 of aces at this point (does not still need to be in the tournament)
14) WOMENS: Name a player who is in the top 5 of aces at this point (does not still need to be in the tournament)

End of Tournament:
15) MENS: Name a player who will be in the top 7 of total games *lost* over the course of the tournament
16) WOMENS: Name a player who will be in the top 7 of total games *lost* over the course of the tournament

Good luck. If you are confused about any of the questions let me know.

The shasum of my 16 answers is 35a1bbf61452bfa6862b2e2e45b326fc5f2b635c, which at the end of the PEEHS I'll show the text file and anybody can confirm from the matching hash, meaning I couldn't have changed any of them.

Question 15/16 is new this year.

You want a player that both goes far enough to play a bunch of matches, but also a player that is losing a lot of games on that path. And there will be the chance for some oddball answers. For example last year, Andreas Seppi didn't even make the quarters but still lost 92 games, good for 5th place overall and would have been a correct answer for this question.

There are two Q on Q games in round 1. Are we allowed to change answers 11/12 if our pick gets put into one of those games?

You can submit an updated entry up to the deadline if you want to wait until the full draw is set. Whatever is the latest entry you send before the deadline is the version I'll use.

For the purposes of that question a qualifier is just lumped into the bucket of "unseeded", they'd need to upset a seeded player to qualify (though I understand if there is a particular player you have in mind, where they end up in the draw is significant for this question).

Trying to decide if I want to try to put together an entry. I remember a stressful time at the park with my kids on my phone trying to make sure I at least didn't join THE CLUB last year.
