tbf Medvedev looked spent being in back to back finals. He had multiple break points in an epic 10 min. first game of this match. After losing that game you could see his will was broken. Credit Rafa for coming out so strong. It was also really windy again today which was a problem all week.

Rafa is withdrawing from Cincy, last I heard.

Well Murray is in that draw. Unless he has withdrawn (and I don't see anything saying that he has) he is playing singles in Cinci.

Oh wow- maybe you're right. That's crazy. I follow this stuff pretty closely and somehow missed this Murray news.

You are correct- it's his singles comeback tournament.

So with Nadal withdrawing, the two halves of the bracket are even more lopsided.

Top half has:
Novak,
Isner
Kyrgios
Khachanov
El Shapo
Federer
Wawrinka (vs Dimitrov in the first round again, for like the third tourney this year)
Medvedev
Tsitsipas

Bottom half has:
Zverev
FAA
Monfils
Cilic
Returning Andy Murray vs Gasquet
Thiem
Nishikori
...and Kukushkin as Nadal's replacement.

Bottom half had Cilic and FAA already lose today. Wow.

Gasquet over Murray 6-4 6-4

About what you would expect, and yes, it was pretty bad. Andy showed a few flashes by using his brain but everything physical seemed off. Serve was all over the place. I kinda felt sorry for Gasquet out there, he was in a no win situation. Very odd match to be sure.

Kyridiculous Nick.
Khachanov up next. Should be hot fire.

Fed finally holds serve.

4-2 Rublev to serve

Complete arse kicking there

Not looking good for the US.

Wow, looks like it continued on that path-- Fed lost to Rublev in straight sets.

Khachanov lost to Pouille as well. This is a wild M1000.

I'd be surprised if Fed makes it to the semis at the Open.

I'll tell you what...if you want to make what I think is easy money, bet on Joker to win the Open. You can still get plus money at most places.

Yeh I agree. Laying Fed is looking good.

That throw away at Wimbledon will take a hell of a lot to recover from.

I was shocked to see this happen. It looked like Djokovic was in complete control after the first set. Medvedev just went for it aggressively in the last two sets figuring he had nothing to lose. No way he could do that in a 5 setter against Joker. He's got a great future though but my guess is he's still a year or more away from maybe winning a major.

he's got goofy looking groundstrokes. doesn't seem to have much power at all. forehand is reminiscent of jack sock's. no idea how he won besides that serve.

The thing is if he had any shot to upset Djokovic at the Open this year that's gone now. Joker will be ready for him.

Medvedev is basically Simon 2.0 with a bigger serve. Flat ground strokes, doesn't really have any offensive weapons, but can get the ball back consistently on either wing.

Yeh my thought too.

I reckon this might be the one where Novak wins one without dropping a set.

His forehand is not flat. He's running in the 4300rpm range which is where most of the top guys are. His preparation for the stroke is weird but he is developing spin somehow. His backhand is flat 2300rpm but it is a weapon. He is lethal from that side and can crush it from anywhere. His first serve is extremely effective as he can spot it all day long at 125mph. Seems to enjoy the really fast surfaces.

Joker will be praying Medvedev lands on the other side of the draw come US Open. Hope he didn't burn out this summer. When's the last time a non big 4 player got to the finals in 3 straight tournaments? Probably been a while.
