Fun day at Indian Wells today. Got there around 10 and watched a few players in the practice courts: Raonic (he's a giant!), Mugurza, Rafa, and the Williams sisters. Pretty cool that you get to see all of those players up close on the practice courts.
Then watched Goffin who was playing fairly well except that he couldn't serve for **** and ended up double faulting a couple of games away which ended up being the difference.
Next was Nishikori vs Manarinno. We got there at the start of the third set which ended up going to a tiebreak. Extremely fun to watch. Nishikori's backhand is a thing of beauty, but Manarinno would put everything back in play with what seemed like lazy shots but that had great placement. In other words, he's the ATP version of Hsieh.
After lunch we watched a few games of Ostapenko and then headed over to watch Cilic. Although he won in straight sets it was a pretty close match with lots of games going to deuce.
That match was followed by Shapovalov-Johnson. Wow, I'm now a Shapovalov fan. He hit some amazing shots, but also seemed to go for winners every other shot. If he tones that down a little he will be at the top for sure.
Tomorrow we have Stadium 1 tickets for the day and night sessions so I'm hoping for competitive matches. The following players are scheduled to play in stadium 1: Raonic, Venus, Zverev, Osaka, and Djokovic.
