FWIW I'm a Nadal truther, not a Djoker fanboy, though very clearly Djokovic had the highest peak.

The thing I don't understand about Federer is why is he winning all these slams now, instead of from 2010-2016. Is the 2017/2018 edition of Federer somehow better than the 2010 one? If Federer wins this AO, he'll have won 3 out of the last 4 slams he's entered, whereas before that he won 2 out of the previous 26. Was there something about turning 35 that made him great again?

Or is the truth that Fed is an expert and absolute specimen at longevity and making sure to be in the right place at the right time so he can take advantage. Sometimes that means playing at an insane level and winning the 2017 AO over many great competitors. Sometimes that means skipping the French Open so he can prepare for grass much longer than any of his rivals and give himself the best chance at Wimbledon. And sometimes, like this year, that is getting very lucky and having to only beat a bunch of scrubs to get to the final.

in the politics forum, they would call that concern trolling.

How long has it been since 1 and 2 met in WTA Grand Slam final? Apologize if answer is not that long ago

No sleep. Didn't have a chance to watch as much of this tourney as I've liked, ****ing adult life but definitely tuning in for these finals.

Team Woz but either outcome good for tennis.

I don't like that Fed hasn't been tested all tournament against a player that will test him. I buy into the battle tested theory so we'll see.

The last time the No. 1 and 2 seeds met in an Australian Open women's final, No. 1 Serena Williams beat No. 2 Maria Sharapova in straight sets in 2015. That was 11 years after the previous time, when No. 1 Justine Henin beat No. 2 Kim Clijsters in three.

I guess when Serena was #1 and in the final by default, there was always a decent chance the #2 player would luckbox through their side of the draw.

strength of opponents is a ******ed argument. All any player can do is go out and beat whoever is next up.

His backhand is miles better now.

No, he's a better player. Genuinely. He's improved his game.

He got a bigger racquet head a couple of years ago for his backhand and worked on it with Edberg. He now attacks on it rather than that stupid slice to Rafa forehand.

He's also added things into his game like SABR.

And just as I say that each player has a terrible service game and gives up an easy break.

They both look really weary now.

Halep rolling now, we'll see if she tightens up now that she is close to winning

Unfortunate finish for Halep. A final service game with a double fault at a crucial time and failure to hit winners from a dominant position. Won't help her future confidence imo. She played incredibly well though considering she appeared near death at various points of the game.

Incredible quality even though you could tell both ladies were exhausted by the end of it. Woz ultimately just a little more consistent and error free.

Would have been happy with either outcome but I think I'm slightly happier with Wozniacki finally getting a slam, five years after she was last number 1.
Also impressive that she dropped to 75 or so (without being seriously injured; I think) and made it all the way to top spot.

Tennys is at it again, albeit more sensible this time:

Really good final, really good women's draw this year. Goes a long way to offset the implosion on the men's side.

No doubt some idiots will still summarize this is a Halep "choke", which was certainly a possibility but not what actually happened. Describing it as such would be unfair to both of them. It was won, not lost.
