ATP/WTA 2018: The Year of the Dimitrov ATP/WTA 2018: The Year of the Dimitrov

...Everyone the casuals have heard of is either hurt or a thousand years old, it's time, finally, for a new GS winner.

And that winner will be the former perennial disappointment Grigor Dimitrov.

...thus spoke Zarathustra.

Britain's Andy Murray has had hip surgery in Melbourne and says he hopes to be playing again in time for this summer's grass-court season.

Feel for Murray, especially when this time last year you thought he could win 2 or 3 slams in a year to to know, not knowing what's going to happen to him.

I'd lay Dimitrov to win a slam, different kettle of fish over 5 sets. He may fluke one like Cillic or Stephens.

Still life left in the old dogs yet, couple more years then it'll be the next gens chance to share a few between them.

Will there be an Aussie Open PEEHS this year? It's always been fun.

Hope so, i'll be in for it.

Wouldn't mind doing a bracket as well. I'm on holiday at the moment so wouldn't be able to organise/run either.

I think Sascha Zverev ends up #1 at the end of 2018

I doubt he'll get to a slam semi or get another 1000 win.

He didn't have any good showings in the Grand Slams last year, right? But he did win back to back M1000s, though. Real ones, against Novak and Fed. Not like Jack Sock who won Paris at the end of the year against a rando young up and comer.

He's the next generation of the sport. The big four are fading either due to age or injury and Sascha is the next guy to take the throne. Guy's only 20 and he's in the top 5.

Most boring player in tennis John Isner lost to the Korean Chung, with a 6-2 final set.

Nice.

Outside of a few by Wawrinka, Cilic & del Potro, the Big Four have won every single Grand Slam in the past 12 years (43/48). Including Wawrinka as a B5, as he's won just as many GS's as Murray, it's 46/48 and all 12 of the past 3 years.

It's still their time. Yes, they are getting old and injured, but one of them will still come through. Team Old > Team Young.

If the line is 2.5, will the olds hit the over on Grand Slams won this year?

I say nay. Murray is perma-done, Novak sucks now, and Fed and Raja can't do it all again this year.

Oh yeah, I forgot. There's women's tennis too. Like ladies' professional wrestling, it's sort of fun to watch them do their thing, but I'm not really that into it.

Easy.

3.5 is a tough one though.

Agree with kingweed. Esp if you include players 29+ on Team Old (Wawrinka, Cilic, del Potro), since they are indeed old.

Based on the rough lines patron gave I got the big 4 winning 3+ slams at ~60%. Pretty big dog for them to win all 4 though.

Thanks for the calcs. There's a pretty big overround in those lines though. I got them from Bovada, since they had odds for every GS this year. Pinnacle had sharper AO lines, but no lines for the others. They were close enough to post though, since the initial point was simply to confirm that the Olds are the favorites for every GS this year.

I lengthened them a little in my calculations as I was assuming they weren't very generous odds. I probably still overestimated the chances somewhat but I doubt it's by enough to make under 2.5 a favourite.

The "olds" is about the Big 4 and how many M1000s and Grand Slams they've won, not actual just age.

So we (Young Guns) should get Wawrinka because dude can't win a M1000 to save his life. Delpo sucks and is a non-threat, so he can be an old since he won a 2009 Grand Slam.

I stand by the 2.5 line. I say they get the under. No way Raja, Fed, & Djokavic win 3. Delpo sucks as previous stated, and Jaime Murray has a better shot than Andy.

I know this looks like I'm just baiting someone to challenge me to put money on this, but that's not my goal.

If I were betting, I would probably say the Olds are the big 4 and Delpo, Wawrinka is a neutral and counts as a 0.5, and the Youngs are everyone else.
