Re: All-Time English Premiership Draft

Dont think the RVN pick is as bad as many are making out, there might be a lot of very good strikers, however very few and arguably none remaining (emphasis on arguably) are better than RVN.

IMO he was quality and his ability to always be in the right place for a tap in was one of the most infuriating qualities ever possessed by an opfor player.

RVN really got those haters mad.

Re: All-Time English Premiership Draft

I guess it makes me a double idiot but my decision came down to Schmikes vs RVN.

RVN the best pure striker in Prem history after Shearer....

Shearer's a beast BTW and could be a legit first pick, problem is that his peak years are '90-97 and less than 20% of this thread were watching then.

Re: All-Time English Premiership Draft

The thread needs to remember that Ronaldo had 3 good-great seasons in the Prem from 06-09; with only 07-08 being a Madrid-esque season of individual awesomeness that we've become used to.

The challenge of this draft is to keep it on topic and to keep 1992-2005 relevant. For example the current consensus seems to be Ronaldo > Giggs.....

That's laughable. Giggs 1991-2005 is absolutely out of this world; Ronaldo IN THE ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP can't touch him.

Re: All-Time English Premiership Draft

Guys saying a GK in first round is spew don't understand anything at football?

This is the most important position, except for GOATS like Thierry Henry, shearer or CR7 nobody can claim he can help his team more than a GOAT goalkeeper like Smeichel. And again PL have the worst GK of all time it's by far the thinest position

The difference between Buffon and Dida over a full championship might well be something like 15 points, and this is without considering CL match were GK is even more important

Don't like RVN there's at least 2 other strikers that are >>>>> him available

As a pure goal scoring machine on a stick RVN>>>>Rooney. You can bring the other attributes Rooney has into your squad via other players.

Never done one of these drafts before but it seems pretty difficult finding a balance between a player who sustained a high level of performance over an extended time to someone who had huge impact over 2-3 seasons.

The people who have watched the premiership from its inception are going to favour the former and the people who are relatively new to soccering are going to favour the latter.

This. To be honest I don't think there have been any really bad picks so far. I think 3rd pick and onwards is when there will be bigger differences of opinion.

That isn't the case for me. I would have Shearer and Elbows below where they went and Ronaldo and Undrafted above.

dislike schmeichel pick obv

think GK is the least important position on the pitch so the gap between schmeichel and #2 keeper would have to be gigantic for it to be a good pick

Re: All-Time English Premiership Draft

Maybe it is hyperbole but I wanted to point out that Ronaldo needs to be considered as the player that was overhyped and unproductive for 50% of his Premiership career that blossomed under the GOAT manager into one of the top 10 players that ever lived but most of that end result was displayed in La Liga.

Not defending my pick because lolJD but Goalkeeper being least important is nonsense; replace Schmikes with Sealey and replace Scholes with Fortune and I guarantee the latter Man Utd wins more than the former.

Just look at Bosnich/Barthez/Howard/Carroll/Taibi/Ricardo shenanigans that cost us tons and tons of points and European advancement potential.

Re: All-Time English Premiership Draft

Great draft so far. But if we are not drafting careers Giggs obviously too high. Peak Ronnie in the prem was more dangerous than peak Giggs. Roy Keane had an emmence career but there were a few players who were better than him in their peak. But its hard to argue against it too much. Schmeichel pick isn't terrible. I can only think of about 4 really elite keepers in the prem era. And locking up the no.1 is pretty useful if not first round material.

Lol all the undrafteds talk. It's pretty simple don't mention players undrafted.

Lamps obv no.1

5-10....which is far more discernible and obvious than RB vs RB or holding mid vs holding mid.

The best keepers improve the defenders in front of them through sheer strength of character and morale at knowing you're in safe hands...very few positions on the pitch have that knock-on effect.

Basically with the #10 pick I was able to guarantee that even if the rest of my squad fell to pieces people will always look at one of my positions and say - "he has the best there is." That was impossible to do with any other pick available to me.
