Seems like this is the answer Yeah? Dude beats the double murder and is appealing the Lloyd killing.

By killing himself, he saves his family whatever amount he has left. Makes sense if that's accurate.

how are so many of these cells so conducive to hanging? The whole prison system is aware of suicides and suicide watches, they restrict what items inmates can have (no rope, no belts), but there always seems to be bed sheets and an iron bar just waiting.

Outside of watching or restraining someone 24/7, it is pretty tough to keep a person from harming themselves if they are determined to do it.
