probably some combination of dumb luck + "don't snitch"...

think about it, there are thousands of people in america right now that have killed someone and gotten away with it. now add in a close (or dead) inner circle and a damn villagery career (coddled hs star, all-american in college...) and then add in binking a random, dumb-luck longshot or two and it seems pretty easy to see how he got as far as he did.

Well murdering one witness and shooting another in the face and dumping them on the side of the road probably had a chilling effect on people complaining about him.

Aaron Hernandez walked into a California tattoo shop in the spring of 2013 and allegedly asked a tattoo artist to add three new symbols onto his heavily inked physique. Two were pictures of handguns, and a third said, "God forgives" — written backward so it could be read in a mirror. ...

Both of the guns portrayed in the tattoos match those used in the shootings, Suffolk First Assistant District Attorney Patrick M. Haggan said in Suffolk Superior Court Tuesday, arguing that the body art "is in fact an admission by Mr. Hernandez."

To be fair, he also got a "God Forgives" tat at the same time so it evens out in the end.

Obv a completely different situation/city, but Baltimore PD had less than a 10% clearance rate for 2015 murders and that doesn't include those who got off on the charges. Not too farfetched to think normal big city clearance rates are around 50/50.

EDIT: This article (https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/c...15-murder-wave) says it was 30% (less than half 2014 national average), but I vaguely remember seeing a David Simon retweet of a Sun(?) article suggesting it was <10%.

EDIT2: Found Tweet: https://twitter.com/AoDespair/status/674668100667748352

Simon's estimate was 10-15% of cases are actually cleared and convicted.
