The majority owner of the Alliance of American Football told USA Today Sports that league is in danger of folding without help from the National Football League Players Association.

lol this is the guy that put the 250m into it

it's weird - sounds like the AAF has access to a decent % of younger NFL players, plus the undrafted, unsigned, plus CFL transfers seems like enough to fill 8 rosters

gotta give Manziel credit for not putting up with trash talk as soon as he enters the game for Memphis

They don't have anyone on a futures contract and almost all of those just end up being camp bodies which is really dumb from a development perspective but it's probably due to the CBA. They have enough to fill rosters but the only marketable guys are guys the Browns shouldn't have drafted.

Ideally you'd have the draft during pro bowl week and let some of the draft/college UFA's play in the games. Half of them in the lower rounds aren't making a NFL roster anyway.

Sure it'll be more like game 4 of the NFL preseason, but it might be enough to take your kid to a game.

Did manziel get much media attention?
I didnt see anything about him playing until i watched the game

I think it is one of those things that people tune in to see Manziel for a minute or they check the highlights but then 30 seconds later realize it is still AAF and stop caring.

It is hilarious. Why would the AAF work when the UFL didn't work only 5-10 years ago?

No one cares because of mediocre QB play, mediocre O-line play, no stars except players who were bad in the NFL, no fantasy, bad market decisions as trying to put teams where no NFL team is doesn't work since many of these markets are tied to college, and a terrible time of the year to run football since you are competing against March Madness and other sports playoffs. People don't need more football after it ends, and would be far more inclined to watch around June/July to get their fix.

Speaking of the locations of the teams, let's see how bad it is.

Atlanta- Oh boy, this is an absolutely terrible location for a minor league team. You already have the Falcons and Georgia. Good luck getting a city that doesn't give a **** about sports in general to care about minor league football. Not surprised to see they are almost last in attendance.

Birmingham - Ok, a city that will never have a real major league sports team, but lol at trying to get people that care about Auburn and Alabama to pay attention this sports league. I'm sure people are also clamoring to watch a game at a 100 year old stadium that holds 70k people. Must be an awful atmosphere.

Memphis - A slightly better Birmingham. Too much college presence all around and another terrible stadium.

Orlando - The Pro Bowl is probably more exciting for people that live here, but for real, not a bad choice since it's kind of a football no man's land. Probably good also for tourists and a place for families to go to.

Arizona - Another terrible location. Phoenix is not a football hotbed, and already is saturated with other teams. The Cardinals have some of the lowest NFL attendance, and with a capacity of about 63k for their stadium (I'm sure it's no mistake why the stadium is that small), they aren't even selling out all the time.

Salt Lake - I'm not sure what to make of this city. It would seem like a good location, but they are DFL in attendance. This one doesn't scream blatantly stupid like some other locations.

San Antonio - Probably the best location and has a sizable market. A football state with an under-served market in Austin/SA. This is the perfect type of league for a boring and family oriented city. 1st in attendance by a large margin.

San Diego - This is a huge risk. SD already didn't seem to care much about the Chargers. I guess they are banking on big football fans missing out on live football. It could also easily go the other way with people being disenfranchised with any type of football. Attendance is surprisingly good being in 3rd place.

The AAF is clearly going to fail with mostly terrible cities picked. Orlando and SA are the only two that seem like solid choices.

Salt Lake had a snow home game, I'd like to see attendance ignoring that one.

Birmingham just needs more Auburn/Alabama players. Atlanta is obviously LOL for a pick, but they just wanted another not cold city I guess for that early in the season.

San Diego was a fine pick, St.Louis should've been one (the XFL did but like every other city is a NFL team and basically none of the first go around except LA, and nobody cared).

I don't know what you expect though, minor leagues in all but maybe 5 cities are so are gonna be shaky. There's even lower leagues going on (mostly in the midwest) but they have teams fold/move to another league all the time. Philly is the only arena football league team from a few years ago still alive there (most of the bigger arena names like tampa bay/orlando folded when the TV contract died).

I don't remember Omaha UFL numbers but that's a spot I would've rechecked, they tailgate about anything football up there. Probably too cold for spring games tho.

The thoughts on quality of stadium is overrated though, I don't think that matters for this league.

Regarding bad time for football, man I don't know, fall/winter are dead for obvious reasons and lots of people like to do other **** in summer.

The Orlando Sentinel’s sports editor Mike Bianchi has a morning drive time show on one of the AM sports yak stations, which is also the station that carries the Orlando AAF games on radio. This past weekend’s game was not aired on radio. He just said the reason for that was that they haven’t paid their bills at the radio station. He did not specify whether it was the team or the league with the unpaid balance.

He said he’d be surprised at this point if the league makes it to the playoffs [i]this year[i/] before folding.

And just el oh ****ing el at Tom Dunderhead trying to dump this bucket of fail at the feet of the NFLPA. This league was neither created nor marketed as a minor league for the NFL. If you needed to contract with the NFLPA in order to survive then you should have contracted with the NFLPA before starting your stupid league in the first place. And we didn't hear a word about the NFLPA when this moron was dumping a quarter of a BILLION into it not two weeks into the first season. How he became a billionaire I will never understand.

The league owns the teams. And when I read the headline I assumed it was about a lack of funds - actually it’s 250 mill complaining about a lack of access to players with folding being a possible consequence.

It's actually not a bad stadium, especially given the piss-poor attendance of this living abortion of a league. Granted, 20K seats will be about 15K more than needed LOL!

They've been hosting NCAA FCS Championship games for a few seasons now. Further, Frisco keeps the attendees in the shadow of the Metroplex without having to pay some of the fees associated with going to a game at some place like Jerrah World...

Next league that decides to do this needs to throw a boatload of money at DraftKings and FanDuel to market the **** out of the fantasy aspect of the league and rig the rules to make it an offensive explosion.

That would be useless imo...DK/FD/fantasy sports market is not quite that big that people are gonna wanna play minor league football fantasy.

Next league that decides to do this needs to air it after the NBA/NHL playoffs end because that is the dead zone for sports. Unfortunately, you're gonna have venue issues if you try to do that since it is 100 degrees and humid in a lot of cities around that time. Maybe play the games at night on weeknights.
