Apparently Biles has a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) to take Ritalin for ADHD. However, in Japan Ritalin is not allowed to be used to treat ADHD, and therefore she is not taking her usual medication.

On one hand, this explains why she may have experienced increased poor levels of mental health that she was unable to manage without her usual medication.

On the other hand, I have a pretty low tolerance for TUEs. From the outside looking in, too often it turns out an athlete gets a TUE for something that, coincidentally, improves performance. If we want to see sport completely clean, then I don't want athletes taking any substance that may improve performance. For example, Ritalin is taken by many students to help increase focus when taking exams. It's not difficult to see how this might improve Biles performance in her specific discipline.

Ritalin is an amphetamine and certainly enhances performance in certain specific ways. TUEs for nonessential drugs that enhance performance are suspicious. Just because the rules allow something doesn't make it right.
