Goff is the highest rated red zone QB in the NFL

we all have a tendency to attribute this to coaching when we don't rate the QB (and the QB when we don't like the coach) and I'm sure Ben Johnson has been a good part of it for Goff but he's the guy out there playing and these are good stats

for any average+ QB you can find sampling nuggets suggesting he's elite, but truth is he's a decidedly top 10-15 QB (11th QBR overall last year) who has probably the best o-line in football. again, maybe contract makes good business sense. i consider myself naive as far as contract structure and the future of nfl salary caps go. but the fact he's taking a bigger cap hit than mahomes this year and basically got the same contract as lamar seems ****ing wild.

The cap hit in each season is basically what the team wants it to be. If you don't have cap space you structure the contract in a way that has a very small hit in year one. If you're the Lions who had $26 in available cap you can use that money to increase the cap hit in year one because the rest of the roster is set anyway. So apparently they have $5mil in available cap space now. If they had $10mil less cap space available, Goff's cap hit this season would be $10mil smaller.

Maomes cap hit is $37mil this season and $66mil next year (and $68mil in 2026) which just means they're going to restructure again next offseason which they call "the bank of Mahomes".

i understand cap hits are malleable. lions are still taking $15M hit over mahomes this year, which otherwise could be spent on better players. goff in no world is worth $50M to a random team in FA on a one year contract but lions will pay it because they can't gamble with anyone else, and theyre guaranteeing 120M beyond. seems like one of those decisions that no one will particularly argue with until things go wrong and then you become the laughing stock of the nfl for guaranteeing jared goff $170M i dk

I think that's true, but if you're gonna find sample nuggets then those are about the two best ones....and it's 2 years which is an ok sample size.

10-12 is about right IMO.

6 QBs he's unequivocally worse than

Mahomes
Allen
Herbert
Burrow
Lamar
Stroud

Then I think he's probably in the bottom half of this group, but very definitely still in the same group as them

Dak, Kirk, Jared, Trev, Brock, Love, Stafford, Hurts

fair enough. guess there's no other option for them so you just gotta swing big and either win it all or look stupid. go lions.

Using the available cap space now, minus $5mil in case of emergency, suggests they're mostly done building their team. Otherwise they would have used the money to add more players and move Goff's money down the road.

It's not like there's a bunch of free agents left that would instantly improve a super bowl contender.

Yep I mean given Goff was in the cap for $32m before the restructure it does suggest they’ve worked really hard to front load this thing. Which is smart as it increases flexibility down the track.

I would liked them to have gone harder this offseason tbh - another WR and another top DB particularly. They clearly still hold hope for Jameson Williams and maybe they can get more out of Davis and Robertson

Idk but they get the benefit of the doubt

Gonna have to pay Dak 0. Last year playoff game vs Packers is last straw. Maybe he can be a back up, its over.

I think he’s gonna leave tbh but he will get giant $$ imo. He’s been a very good and smart negotiator to this point

Yeah that Goff contract has probably got Dak drooling.

The contract is whatever, it's the exact same discussion that happens every single time the ~10th best QB gets a deal. The timing was incredibly ideal for him as almost everyone better signed in the last year or two and pushed the floor up

Assume one of these is meant to be Tua

As far as your top 6 I'd agree for the most part. Main disagreement would be Goff and Herbert whose overall stats are a lot closer than I would've thought.

At this point I would be shocked to see Dak getting less than $60mil/year if his 2024 performance doesn't crater.

Let's not forget that the $55mil Burrow got last year is $62.5mil in 2024 cap space and probably $67-68 in 2025 cap space.

If Dak has a season that's at least as good as last year, even $65mil/season might be possible.

I would happily give up any chance the Niners have at winning the Super Bowl for them to end that ****er’s life on the first drive

Fun fact: Bengals and Broncos lost twice at Arrowhead in 2023.

Bengals play at home against the Chiefs in 2027 or if they manage to win their division before that.

Not sure if that qualifies as a "revelation". Widely known that Butker makes Mike Pence look like a liberal among hardcore Christians.

Man I was hoping for 0 national games for Jets this year. We got so many last year and then had no QB. It was embarrissing. Beating Philly in one was fun, but really didn't want to see any this year. Let me watch football in peace. Here we are on Monday Night vs top tier team. FU Goodell.
