Looks like one more person in Atlanta isn't thrilled about the pick.

Quote:
Cousins' agent, Mike McCartney, told ESPN's Pete Thamel that the Falcons only notified the QB that they'd pick Penix while the team was on the clock. McCartney said there is frustration and confusion coming from Cousins' camp because Atlanta did not use its first-round pick to make the team better in 2024.

So how guaranteed is guaranteed?

If Cousins were to say eff this, and refuse to play. Does he still get any of his guaranteed money?

I would have expected more receivers to have gone by 28, so I don't mind it. They can still take McConkey or Mitchell at 33, or McKinstry and then a pretty good WR with their other second

I wonder if anyone will try to trade for Cousins?

He’s received a $50m signing bonus so his deal would be 4 yrs $130m with only $50m more guaranteed.

Basically a 2yr $60m ish proposition with 2 extra years at $40m per if he’s playing well

If that was the case everyone would just retire after singing their big contract

You even have to pay back the signing bonus (prorated) if you retire and the teams wants the money back. Happened to Barry Sanders.

Also if Cousins would retire now and decide to return at a later time he'd still be under contract in Atlanta. The contract basically freezes. That's the reason why players can't just sit out the last year of their contract to become a free agent.

According to Spotac there's only $40mil more guaranteed. The 2026 roster bonus only goes into effect if he's on the roster on the 5th day of the 2025 league year.

But since he has a full no trade clause he can obviously force them to adjust the contract before agreeing to a trade.

If I see the numbers correctly he would cost $50mil for two seasons: 12.5mil + 27.5mil base salary + 10mil 2026 roster bonus.

Godgers won back to back regular season MVPs with davante as his only pass catchers after GB drafted love. Cousins has some pretty solid weapons and he won't be in the MVP conversation. Also, I believe GB was a top 3 or 5 SB favorite pre-draft and Atlanta right now is 10th.

The player. Moving into the first is whatever, I guess. They are trying to add a 5yo option edge by giving up 60 spots of value. I'd still have preferred to just save that value, even in the later rounds, and take the dude at 33, especially for a team that needs a lot, but I can at least understand the theory.

I think Legette is a terrible prospect. Without the extra COVID year, the guy would have finished his college career with 42 catches, 423 yards and 5 TDs over 41 games played. He probably wouldn't have even been drafted last year. I think there are multiple WRs on the board who had better profiles and have more upside.

Guys who aren't early declares are generally bad bets. Guys who don't clear 2 YPRR are generally bad bets. Guys who can't earn targets playing with non-NFL talent in college are generally bad bets. Guys who suck at running routes are generally bad bets.

I'm just not a fan.

But hey, at least he's big and fast.

And we all know Bo Nix sucks. He's nothing like Mahomes so trying to parallel both situations is dumb.

So probably a dumb question/observation.

A lot of times when they interview these kids they'll ask them what it was like getting the call from the team that drafted them, and they act and sound really surprised. Which to me makes it seem like they just found out right before the Rog announced the pick.

But every kid that was at home last night was wearing a hat of the team that drafted them. Like with JJ, there was a lady behind him who handed him a Vikings hat after he was drafted.

That lady most likely had like 15 different hats

I hope they donate the other 14 hats to the goodwill or something.

For a "big" setup like JJ, probably for all 32 teams, just in case? Pretty sure for the big name players who don't attend the draft there's somebody for the NFL present at the location, at least in preparation to set up stuff and make sure everything is good to go for the broadcast plus producing additional footage like interviews.

No idea if the NFL sends over a package or if the hats come from a local retailer? I'd think they go back to where they came from.

The NFL donates thousands (or ten thousands?) of clothing items every year for the losers of the AFC/NFC championship games and Super Bowl. Their non-profit partner ships them out of the country. I think this year a lot of merch went to Ukraine. So there might be kids in Kharkiv who are living SRM's dream of running around in a 49ers SuperBowl Champions t-shirt or hoody.

I mean maybe all 32 teams since it's a cheap insurance policy but I doubt it. I can't imagine she had a Chiefs hat, Bills, Bengals, etc.

She probably didn't have any of those teams right next to her but if the NFL sends out a big "draft stuff" box via FedEx to JJ's house I kinda doubt someone at the NFL or the warehouse goes through the effort of determining which teams shouldn't be in the box? I could obviously be totally off base though.
