Of course they made the auto mistake of signing to 10 years instead of 5. Like Pujols, like Miggy. It's like the goal is to be paying dude's bukoos of millions when they are far from being on top of their game.

yeah, like it should obv increase revenues (especially if they can find new streams, maybe go big in asia and worldwide), but the dodgers gotta be kind of maxed out as is

he'd prob be worth more to a lot of other teams that aren't close to their earnings ceiling, and who wouldn't get screwed by the luxury tax

Sounds like a lot of deferred money, which will reduce the luxury tax hit to $40-50 million per season, from what I read. Still a huge chunk tho.

My guesses are:

1. He was always going to be a Dodger and just flirted with other teams to drive up the price.
2. The reason he got $700M was the (lol insider trader money) Mets offered $70/M a year so he brought that info to Dodgers management and they matched it.

I also thought the MOST Ohtani would get would be $60M/yr absolute tops for a 2 year deal where he looks to re-enter free agency for a longer deal.

Getting $70/M for 10 years is absolutely BANANAS.

Based on my diminishing math skills...

If he DHs every game next year and averages 4.5 at bats per game, which I think are both a little high, he'll get paid roughly $10,000 per at bat.

Not a bad gig if you can get it.

Of course there are pitchers making a million dollars per start. WTF do I care. Not my money.

a majority of his salary is deferred, and estimates suggest he bumps the seasonal revenue by 70-80M.
win-win

Damn I really thought the Royals were going to reel in Ohtani. Maybe next time!

I’d estimate the Dodgers will make back most of that back in marketing and revenue. It’s a total home run. Has there ever been a better threesome than Betts, Freeman and Ohtani?

The question is if Ohtani makes more in 2024 than the Royals opening day roster.

That said, Ohtani actually has to work for his $700mil over the next 10 years. The Royals are trying to collect $1bln+ in tax payer money just not to move. Sounds like a better deal to me.

This is the most hilarious Ohtani conspiracy theory I've seen so far:

As a Jays fan, the idea of Toronto never made sense to me. Sure, he been my new "favourite player" for awhile, but I always felt that the Jays were just leverage. Did he really want to play 10 years in new country when he can play in California?

What I hope this does show is that the Jays are willing to spend some big $ on the right players, but I'd rather see 2 or 3 solid upgrades rather than an Ohtani or even a Judge like contract.

Some players coming our way in conjunction with a Vladdy trade and $$ spent would be good imo.

Miggy managed to get his 8 years extension at 32 when he still had 2 years left on his contact lmao.

Boras is trying to get Harper an extension for his deal that ends in 8 years at 38.
It would be incredible if the Phillies fall for this.

More like 100k per plate appearance using ~700 PAs and his AAV. Seems like he'll probably "only" make like half that per year over the next decade tho

Ohtani deal not official as he has to pass physical? Anyone else see that or is that more nonsense?

Sounds like nonsense but maybe they've found something significant, such as him being unable to pitch next year

Short of finding out he’s terminally ill and only has 5 months to live there is nothing that Correa’s this contract

#2 seems unlikely given the Athletic story that Cohen never heard from Ohtani's agent.

There was never any chance that he would pitch any meaningful number of innings next year.

I think that there is an excellent chance that the Dodgers just paid $700 million for a DH, albeit an exceptional one.

They got the guy who has won the last 3 World Series titles. Seems like the smarter move IMO.
