The Angels, by waiting so long to trade him, backed themselves into a corner where a reasonable package that reflects Ohtani's fair value as a midseason rental, will get them mocked because casual fans and many members of the media just look at the players involved without understanding the contract situations and so on (which, btw, is a much bigger mistake in baseballs, where average rookies are far more valuable than superstars on market-price contracts compared to, say, basketball, where superstars on max deals are far better assets than average players on rookie deals). Meanwhile, other teams have no real reason to give into the Angels' unrealistic demands just to save them from a PR disaster.

The Dodgers....if they decide they want Ohtani now....will certainly offer the best package. The problem is that Moreno seems to have dug in his heels and said he won't trade Ohtani to the Dodgers for any reason. It would be stupid of course. You should always take the best deal. Now I think the Dodgers are pretty confident they can get Ohtani in the offseason. They may just wait and keep all those prospects.

How do you define "best deal" in that context though? From an economical perspective it might very well make sense to not have Ohtani play for the other team in the local market.

It would be ****ed if his mvp and Cy get monkeyed up by switching leagues and splitting stats. Or maybe he could win both in both leagues.
