Astros somehow will make it to at least the ALCS this year. Doesn't matter, because Braves are taking it down.imo

Braves are dayum good. Weird game last night, and their #9 , bregs and Abreu at coors sucked for my bros fantasy baseball team

When Harris slots in 9th. ROTY that kinda got off to a slow start and was hurt a time

Last edited by Schlitz mmmm; 07-19-2023 at 06:06 PM. Reason: Bregs was 2 for 3. But my bro had hoped for more

I just think if you’re going to be trading for Ohtani knowing it’s a true rental, you’re going to pay a metric ton and you have no shot at keeping him (and id throw the Phillies and rangers there), you have to have decent WS equity without him and are a frontrunner with him

This applies to the rangers, just don’t see how it applies to the Phillies

Rangers aren't a frontrunner with Ohtani.

I definitely wouldn't do it for a rental.... however, Ohtani, Wheeler, Nola, and Ranger is nice and it also allows them to move Schwarber to DH and Harper to 1B (which should happen this week regardless).

I get that the Phillies aren't the Braves, but they do have a decent team. Heck, Stott has a 2.8 bWAR.

Oh the Phillies are definitely a good team and they’re a really good team with Ohtani. Problem is they’re still (most likely) not catching the Braves so they’re trading for a rental when the most likely outcome is a best of 3 road series. Way too high variance to justify the move

I think it depends on what is involved. The Phillies do have some redundant prospects. Painter/Abel/McGarry and Rojas (just called up)/De La Cruz/Crawford (I think he'd have to be a future part of a trade).

Not sure I'd sell low on Painter, especially without a deal with Ohtani, but it does seem like a good fit to me. Not saying it gets them to a WS, but it's as good of a time as any. Harper, Castellanos, Schwarber, Realmto, and Trea are north of 30?

Just because you're an *******s, I mean Astros homer doesn't change the fact that the Rangers are top 5 in almost any offensive metric you look at. Adding Ohtani's arm to a pitching staff that is currently 11th in ERA and putting his bat in the middle of the lineup that is leading the league in batting average?

Yeah you're right. Rangers suck.

I got a hundo that says Rangers win the division. Post to book.

PS. How are the Blue Jays doing?

The problem with Ohtani is you can't negotiate with him before the trade. Sure, you can have some wink wink deal with his agent, but if his agent is any good he's taking him to free agency after the season.

If he's going to FA after the season, then doesn't that reduce his trade value?

Exactly what I'm saying. How much do you give up for a rental? LAA in a quandary of trading the best player in the game for nothing close to what he's worth. Or keeping him and losing him for nothing in free agency.

My bad. It was SRM that said teams were going to overpay. I'm not even denying that as making a push for the WS could entice some teams even if it's a rental.

Unless there is a bidding war or a team knows he will sign after a trade, then I agree the Angels won't get full value.

Angels aren’t letting Ohtani go for a discount. I think they’re stubborn enough to roll the dice with him and sell tickets pretending they’re making a playoff push rather than sell him for less than the going rate for him. Whoever trades for him, rental or not, is paying up the ass for him knowing full well he’s hitting free agency

The teams who will absolutely be trying to deal for him:

Rangers
Doyers

The teams who will attempt to deal for him:

Giants
Yankees
Blue Jays

The teams who MIGHT shoot their shot:

Rays
Red Sox
Orioles
Barves

I don’t think it’s realistic to think his free agency will drive down the price. You’re trading for him cuz he’s the single best player in baseball and he might deliver you a title. I don’t think the angels let him go for anything less than the largest (theoretical) haul a trade target had ever gotten

probably a dum question but has anyone actually asked ohtani if he wants to be dealt to anyone other than the doyers? maybe he loves it in SoCal.

97 games into the season, and the Yankees RBI leader, Aaron Judge, has missed 50 of those ganes and has 40 RBIs. Remarkably low for a team leader at this point.

Probably the same way as every other player without a no-trade clause who might get moved at the deadline?

You know the more I think about it the more I think a team like tampa or texas pretty much has to trade for Ohtani. Yes, he’s a rental, but I cannot remember ever seeing the single best player in all of baseball being available as a rental. Tampa especially has to throw their hat in the ring here. There is zero context ever where they can get a player like this, you become the heads on favorite to win it all for the first time in your history and you actually might sell out a few regular season games in that cesspool

Texas for the same reasons but not as aggressively hateful towards the franchise’s existence

I'm a Yankees fan and I love Ohtani.

But they're insane if they are trying to trade for him as a rental with this slap dick team.
