Pit front office does it again!

25 year old Marino drafted #154 with 5x4.4 contract goes for 22 year old Ty Smith drafted #17 at 1x1.26 & a 3rd round pick

Smith is better, cheaper, has uncapped upside and comes with a pick, just insane NJ would do this deal

Is Smith better? Wasn’t he good his first year then fell off planet? Marino was also better his first year though…

maybe marino is a defensive wiz that doesn't show up in the stats

smith is far better, played on a much worse team but outperformed marino in most metrics from simple basic counting stats to corsi and pdo

not that smith is "good" as if he were older or same age it'd be more of a wash but at 22 with that pedigree i'm taking smith 100 times out of 100 here

Yeah the thing is that Marino is quite good defensively while Smith is an absolute tire fire. He turns the puck over all the time and when opponents skate the puck into the zone with him on the ice he may as well be sitting on the bench. Played with pretty good team mates against bad opposition.

He does seem to do pretty well entering the zone himself and certainly still has the pedigree/upside. Not much use for the penguins tho if he puts it all together once the old core is ready for the glue factory

Didnt watch any devils last season, but seems could be a rare deal where it truly is a good move for both.

Pens going at it. Petry... interesting to see if he can bounce back

Awful, Matheson was actually good…really really hate this deal

To be fair, Matheson war REALLY BAD before with Florida. They might have sold high in him. Though Petry is a question mark too I think he'll bounce back and at least he fits the timeline of the team

I'm so ready for Ottawa to be good again. The city really needs it.

top 6 looks pretty good on paper, but is chabot enough to anchor the D?

what version of cam talbot will they get?

i think they'll be better than last year but other than top 6 still looks like a pretty bad team

petry and matheson were kinda even last season, previously petry was always elite and matheson always terrible

one was on a top team in the pens, and one was on the team who picked 1st in the draft

is it possible that matheson just now discovered how to play hockey and/or petry is washed? sure. is it likely?

I don't think this is capital t terrible for the Habs but their fans sure do. Entertaining.

Petry is 34. Good work Pens, trade for a washed up old defenseman with this roster of old players. No idea the “thinking” on this one.

Don't understand why Habs fans hate this. We shed cap. That was the whole point. Probably would've got rid of Petry for nothing. Matheson has upside and Poehling never materialized. I like it.

Yeah he had a great season last year. I was disappointed at first with the trades, I was hoping the pens would get a top 6 forward for Marino. But the D group hasn't been successful in the playoffs and Letang/Dumo are proven playoff players now along with Petry. Hopefully it works out and at first I disliked both trades but at the end of the day Petry>Matheson and Marino wasnt progressing in development.

Petry has hit his ceiling, very likely to be on decline if he hasn’t completely fallen off the cliff already. Matheson is an excellent skater who might have played his best season with potential upside…I just don’t see how this deal isn’t horrible for the Penguins. If not immediately, then very soon after.

The craziest part about all of it is Hockey Canada has a slush fund to pay claimants. The fund is generated in part by the fees all kids from 5-16 pay to play minor hockey. This has never been disclosed. Rather than going to their insurance co., Hockey Canada simply doles out money from the slush fund to keep things quiet. They've paid out 3-4 people so far this year. There's going to be a reckoning for that.

CEO: Hey guys we need to set the budget for next year. We're gonna need sticks, skates, jerseys, travel expenses, promotional materials...are we missing anything?

PLEBS: .....

CEO: Anything on your guys' mind?

PLEB #Beta: Rennie, i think I speak for all of us when I say we need to address a particular 'area of fiscal responsibility' before it gets out of hand...

CEO: Hey hey guys this is an open forum for discussion - both positive and negative. There's no need for the secrecy.

Keep in mind that the Recruit Allowance for Power Enforcement budget line is its own thing altogether. We as Hockey Canada have extreme support from all facets of the organization for this initiative, and we will always - I repeat ALWAYS - find money for RAPE. Now what was your concern?

PLEB #Beta: Motion to adjourn. Seconded.
