There is really no excuse for such a big and wealthy club to start a season in such turmoil, even the dumbest owners should understand that having the (bare minimum) team together in june/july is much more important than saving a few million in negotiations. Even if they initially wanted someone younger or with more flair, or just wanted him cheaper, it clearly took weeks longer than it should have.

Ajax always used to do the same thing every summer, panic buying AFTER losing CL qualifiers and the occasional league game, instead of well before the preparation for the new season starts, or ideally even a transfer window or 2 ahead of when you need players to be reliable starters.
