as a red sox fan i've been very torn by their recent austerity
like a get it, it's not reasonable to just outspend the yankees each year but rather just when they actually have a good core to spend around and get those missing pieces
but i swear they've intentionally tanked last few seasons and always just signed the bare min free agent just to get the fan base to believe they may possibly be trying
they have repeatedly gone out and brought in terrible veteran players like martin perez and nick pivetta - such obvious "we need to play somebody" signings
our starting lineup this year has:
3 good players in yoshida/devers/turner
1 strong prospect in casas
2 league average players in **** and verdugo
3 guys who wouldn't be starters for many mlb teams and are not young at all in arroyo/duvall/mcguire
admittedly, duvall is very polarizing and could wind up being an all star
our starting rotation is running out reclamation projects of kluber and paxton, hot garbage of pivetta and bello, decent prospect in whitlock, career 5th starter pivetta, and hopes and dreams that sale is no longer broken
sure, if kluber/paxton/whitlock/sale all hit the top of their range that's a pretty good rotation, yet you can literally argue that for any mlb team
like i get it, the owners are tired of paying luxury tax and wants to let the team go fallow for a few years, not spend much and rebuild the farm system but my god, they aren't even fielding a team of mlb average players
despite this terrible team they still have so much money tied up that they're still a top spender and stil have one of the biggest payrolls, all this despite having an utterly crap team yet again projected to finish <.500
sure you're no longer in the top 3 in spending, but now you're in the basement - such a terribly run franchise lately - just so upsetting they clear house getting rid of adrian gonzales and manny for free in order to foist lots of contracts on the dodgers and then later doing the same again trading betts who was the heart and soul of the team but then what do they do, not bring up cheap prospect and let them develop but spend 2/3 of that betts savings on league average guys to take his place - just insanity, at least play some youth and let me see there's an attempt to develop cheap guys internally
