She has the yips. She completely psyched herself out. This isnt like Naomi Osaka who deals with depression/mental illness.
You seem to be getting off to the idea that you got to see someone at the top of their sport collapse in front of the whole world.
It’s individual scores, but there’s still a team element. Not like basketball or whatever but the team still considers who is better in what events, order, maybe changing up what you go for if you’re ahead or behind, plus just the mental aspect of supporting and pushing each other.
I have no hate for Biles on this. It IS very individualistic and if she felt like she was going to hurt the teams chances or her safety then don’t go out there. At the same time it’s wrong to act like pushing through that kind of doubt and anxiety isn’t a part of being the best. There are probably thousands of times when she didn’t feel the best in the past and kept going because it was worth it then. That’s likely part of what makes her so dominant- she went past the point where others quit.
The viewpoint that it is ALWAYS laudable or preferable to opt out if you’re uncomfortable, or that the individual is the only person who matters in making that decision doesn’t sit well with me. I have a meeting on Thursday that a bunch of people are involved in. If I just called out that morning and said “hey guys, I’m not mentally prepared to participate”, then I expect I’d be fired the next day and justifiably so.
Basically, I think Biles is in a 99.9 percentile situation where her call about what to do is basically all that matters and to hold it up as something everyone should do all the time isn’t a great idea. Slippery slope and all that. But maybe I’m just becoming a boomer I dunno.
