I know nothing about hockey other than Shane Doan is a Coyotes legend which means Josh Doan was way over drafted at 37

Although depending on who you ask it might only a a round early.

In related news, I just learned that Jason Blake's son (also drafted today) is called Jackson Blake. Lol

Pretty normal. Hockey moreso other sports requires two things:

1) Immersion from very early age
2) lots and lots of money from the parents

I think this year lots of question marks and not as much scouting, so teams relied on family history more than other years.

That's not true at all. Hockey is certainly not a poor person's sport, but tons of lower middle class people start skating at 2-3 years old.

think the 10k hours **** as been debunked (overrated) and it's largely about getting ice, coaching, training, and so on once you get to be 10+, and for that you have to be rich, have connections, or get lucky
(e.g. live somewhere with access to ice)

Yes 'rich' but just being rich doesn't get you there. Tons of 'rich' kids in Canada that play AAA, Jr, and still don't get there. It certainly helps, but I think hardwork and motivation gets you there more than simply being rich. And yes, poor kids just don't play hockey.

ehn, it's mostly a survivorship bias thing

obv if you have zero aptitude for it you can't just buy your way in, but if you're halfway reasonable and have the ability to play every day ... you get the nhl in 2021

^^ Yeah, plenty. I don't think there was even close to this action around the draft time last season, but then again, with the flat cap, and the pandemic being in a worst state last year, and uncertainty of when the next season would begin, that was probably expected.

I think last expansion draft there was similar dealing, but it was mostly with LV.
Last big single day was probably "1-for-1" and Jones for Johansen in 2016.
