He’s a far better QB as Pat. The data backs that up

A team of 11 Josh Allen’s would beat a team of 11 of any other NFL player. Duh.

hmm, I'd probably take 11 George Kittles...although 11 Derwin James or Devin Whites would be tempting too

Good luck trying to block Aaron Donald with those guys. On offense I would just run wishbone with a lot of QB sneaks. Think I could get several first downs, on defense your only hope is to throw up shotgun hail mary jump balls into double coverage 1 second after the snap.

A couple things.

Steelers signed Roethlisberger to a one-year deal for 2021.

Apparently, the Ravens are going to propose a new overtime setup: spot and choose.

Here's a link to it, but basically its having one team choose a spot on the field, and the other team gets to choose offense/defense.

The coin flip determines which you are. Not decided if it would be sudden-death from there, or a full/partial period. Interesting idea on the surface, we'll have to see the details.

As the article states, leaves lots of room for second-guessing too, so fun for fans.

Interesting. Seems like the first choice of the 2 would always be a team choosing the spot. Would a team ever not choose the 50 yard line though?

Not at all obvious that midfield is the Nash Equilibrium. Like if you chose own 40 I'd still take the ball. I suspect the NE is going to be something like own 15-20 depending on the scoring rules.

I think the potential issue with the "I split, you choose" mechanic is that the side that has the final choice is almost always favored (at which point its dependent on a coin flip like the current system, just with an added step). Better system imo would be for each team to submit a sealed bid on where they would be willing to start from to take the ball, and the furthest bid from the opposing goal line wins and takes it. This removes the kickoff, adds intrigue for fans (and maybe has some lols when you see a huge divergence) and is fairer in terms of how much flip variance plays. I guess you could have something like tie-break goes to the home team, but the value of that should be small ish.

Would be even better as a second price auction, but that's a bit too wishful.

I think they should continue the game into the 5th quarter of a tie game, like the change between the 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th....no kickoff. But sudden death....would have some interesting strategy in the 4th, late in the game and it's tied

Thinking about it a little more, if team 1 has first choice on selecting field position, why would they not choose opponents 1 yard line.

I like your alternative proposal of field position blind bid

I think one other thing about OT is the perceived impact of the coin flip. Regardless of what statistical evidence says, I would think most fans really hate the variance of the flip, and really hate when their team loses without touching the ball.

The "new" OT rules help this a bit, but I think it's still somewhat unsatisfying from a fan experience viewpoint. I'd love to have a system that far less reliant on randomness and punishes bad coaches. The Ravens proposal is a step in the right direction, but I suspect most teams will choose to take the ball almost agnostic of spot, regardless of what the math says.

Coaches will get crucified for playing defense from the 5 and giving up a score versus having their O go out and punt 25 yards later. It took us about five decades to go for it on 4th and 1; I'm not super bullish on coaches making close to optimal choices in this format.

Going to try to explain this a different way: Team 1 chooses how many yards the team that starts on offense will be from their goal-line (let's say they choose 70 yards away) and then Team 2 will choose if they want to start on offense 70 yards from their endzone or if they'd prefer to allow team 1 to start on offense 70 yards from their endzone.

In your example if you are team 1 you are saying you should choose the opponents 1 yard line so they have to go 99 yards to score. They are instead going to choose defense and you (team 1) will have to drive 99 yards to score.

Who picks the direction the teams go? I can see where if one team had a better kicker that the wind could be a factor and possibly influence the strategy of where to place the ball.

if 50 is the spot, the other team would choose to play offense from there.

the 15 yard line is 0 expected points, so that's probably where it hits an equilibrium

Not late in the game when defenses are tired. I think it's probably closer to the 10 and for top teams with good offenses it may be the 5

The best way to do this would be for Team A to say something like "We want the ball placed on the 14 yard line on the north end of the field".

Then, Team B chooses whether they want to play offense or defense.
