Too much for Wentz. He was awful from a clean pocket last year. And what is essentially a top 16 protected pick for what is essentially trash is bad.

Wentz was last in any/a last season and is on a huge contract. Seems really bad for the Colts.

I guess Frank loves Carson, but agreed it was definitely a slight overpay but I think there is some upside. I guess they wanted Carson over Cam, Fitz, Teddy or whoever could be available soonish.

The Colts have a great OLine and will keep Wentz upright and protected. Oh wait:

The Eagles will receive the 85th overall pick in this year's draft, and the conditional second-rounder can become a first-round pick based on Wentz's playing time, according to sources. Wentz needs to play at least 75% of the Colts' offensive snaps for the 2022 conditional pick to convey to a first-rounder, according to sources.

I like the deal. Colts did well.

Frank Reich and Wentz. REUNITED and it FEELS SO GOOD!

One of the talking heads on ESPN (Booger maybe?) was saying a couple weeks ago the Colts are one piece away from being a legitimate contender--that being QB. I believe at that time they were discussing good landing places for Watson.

I don't think Wentz is the right answer. We'll see.

Watson is great but no one in bloody hell do the Texans trade Watson in the division. They really should have went harder on Stafford but if the Lions wanted a QB back who was decent, I guess they had nothing to get back.

I think Wentz can work his way back up to average with upside to do more, 1st isn't too bad for him. He's only 28.

Last year was his only year that bad and that team sucked all around. 2018-2019 he was league avg (2019 also team sucked)....Don't expect him to ever get back to 2017 status but the middle of the 2018/2019 with a good supporting cast around him in a weak division? Ehh, yeah maybe it was an overpay but that's what QB's go for.

What else were Colts gonna do at QB? They're trying to win now. I'd be more inclined to say it wasn't a good deal if I was given an alternative plan. Next best option would probably be just signing Fitzpatrick for 15m and while I think him/Wentz are probably similar, Wentz is younger and has more upside.

I didn't watch a lot of the Iggles last year but from what I saw, yes, Wentz sucked and badly ... but good lord was that an awful surrounding cast. I'm optimistic that he can be adequate in the right situation and Indy's solid line, running backs and possession of receivers with hands made from substances other than stone is a start.

Watson+Colts are probably like -3 @KC but yeah, Colts were never getting him for a few different reasons.

I guess I just don't see the upside with Wentz. "The Eagles were bad", ok, but the Colts don't have a ton of weapons either outside of JTT and MPJr both of who are stars in the making not sure things (JTT might already be there i guess).

"Dat Colts OLine doe", ok true, but Wentz was awful from a clean pocket. What good does protecting Wentz do if he's still bad?

"He's got potential", ok, where has he been hiding it. After 6 years in the league, one good one starts to look more like an aberration than potential. That, coupled with the injury history make it look like a big gamble for a 1st and a 3rd (he's almost certain to play >75% of the snaps barring injury).

Hope I'm wrong but woof I'd rather have run Eason out there and half-tanked if Wentz was the other option.

Eagles fan here, have watched pretty much every game of Wentz's career. Up through 2019, I thought he was going to be our QB for the next 10 years. Then 2020 happened. It's hard to overstate how awful he was. Inaccuracy, inability to see the field, terrible decision making; he did absolutely nothing right last year.

Late in the year before he got benched, Pederson was running this ridiculously stripped down offense to just get him rolling with easy completions and he still ****ed it up. I honestly have no explanation for it, it was like he just forgot how to play QB. Honestly, my best guess is that the concussion he suffered to end 2019 messed him up mentally somehow. Idk. Sad that it all ends this way.

Legit have no idea what the Colts are getting, I don't know if he can be a functional QB anymore.

Member that one time someone put a side by side video of David Carr's footwork in the pocket from college and whatever the hell happened after a few years getting beaten up in Houston. It's almost as if consistent punishment/injuries can wreck a QB.

Just something I thought of for no reason.

In before BOIDS returns to NFL threads once lolWentz has a completely elite o-line like that wasn't what made him semi competent in the first place

I mean, he's not Mahomes, no one is saying there aren't red flags but before last year he was a mid-tier QB even if you throw out his 2017 season. I'd rather gamble on him than go with Brissett or some of the other FA QB's.

Reich must be confident he can "fix" him to give up that kinda compensation given his recent play. Colts have a good amount of cap room to add a weapon or two as well.

Getting to play titans/jags/texans 2x each should help too.

If Wentz still is a poor QB they will just bench him or cut him after this year or early of the following year so he probably doesnt hit 75%. After this year there is no cap hit. They are win jow and Eason gives you no shot and the team is too good to finish 4-12. Wentz contract doesnt look as bad as people make it out to be now, $25mil a year and can cut him after 2021 season with no cap hit.

I agree, I am an Eagles fan, who thought Wentz was always overrated.

But, this isn't a terrible price, Reich/Wentz get along really well, and Reich will be able to coach him up in a way Pederson couldn't.

Wentz clearly has talent he just can't read a defense and was arrogant about being coached.

He's a bright guy so if he starts to listen I think he can become a ~6-12 QB.

$15M becomes guaranteed for 2021 as of March 19th of this year. If we cut him, that will be our cap hit.

Re: snap count. I believe its this year since the pick is for 2022. Theres basically no world outside of injury where Wentz doesn't play 75% of the Colts snaps. You don't trade for the guy and pay him $25M/yr not to ride with him. As you said, the Colts are too good to be 2-8 most likely, so they're going to ride Wentz and pay the 1st.

Hope he works out.

So run/run/pass/punt is the breakeven point?

Theres a $15mil cap hit if they cut him after the 21 season?

From the Eagles side, this isn't the haul of picks they were hoping for, but it's nice to get anything at all, given that it was 100% clear that Wentz was going to be traded since the situation had deteriorated so badly.

That said, this has been a massive organizational failure. To go from signing Wentz to a 100+ mil extension in 2019 to trading him and taking a 30 million cap hit in 2021 is just absurd.

Correct.

This season: $25M fully guaranteed
Next season: $22M ($15M becomes fully guaranteed if he's on the Colts' roster March 2021)
