How does Watsons contract work if hes traded? He has a cap hit of $15mil this year but a dead cap hit of $67mil, does Houston eat that $67mill of the contract and now Watsons yearly cap hit drops that much over the length of the contract?

Was listening to Peter King on 1 of the PFF pods and he said he didn't think Watson gets moved, just said he thinks Caserio won't want to be known as the guy who traded Deshaun Watson.

Seems like Watson may have to pull a Carson Palmer if he wants out.

Watson seems to have committed himself. I don't see how he possibly suits up for the Texans again.

Palmer was pretty rich when he did that, rookie deals were more $ then and he got paid top QB $ for like 4-5 years at the time.

Watson had 3yrs of rookie QB $ then 1yr of getting paid, guess we'll see.

The difference is teams didn't really want Palmer much and the only reason Raiders got him is because Jason Campbell broke his leg or whatever, Watson will immediately command a huge haul so it shouldn't get to that point.

the thing with Watson is how young he is. it isn't like he's a 32yo DE or a 28yo RB. He's 25 and a QB. Even if he misses a season he's got 10+ years of earning ahead of him and so even if he misses an entire year, it's not gonna affect his wealth much and he might be totally committed to 'winning' and getting out of dodge

also of note - he earned $30m last season and is only due $10m this coming year, so he's actually not costing himself as much as you'd think by sitting out this season

the thing with Caserio is that everything points to it not being his decision but Easterby running the franchise. weird in some ways that a guy who was Team Chaplain at the Patriots is clearly so divisive and machiavellian but that seems to be his MO. So who tf knows what a power crazed, ambitious, pig headed religious dude in his first year in a powerful position is gonna do. He could easily be so certain he's right, that he'll just let Watson sit out for years


IMO, I think this will come down ultimately to how the Texans feel about the non Trevor QBs in the draft. If they do the evaluations and conclude that Wilson or Fields or Lance is gonna be elite, then I think they'll trade + take a package from the Jets or Fins and go full rebuild

The math on what Watson loses by sitting out is complicated - sitting out a year tolls his contract, so next year he'd make $10mm instead of the $35mm he would make. I don't know the legalities of the CBA but aside from the fines, there may be some point HOU can start clawing back his signing bonus if they wanted to get ugly / dug in. This isn't a franchise tag where he's not actually under contract - he's under contract and the Texans can hit him aside from just not earning his salary. With how insane the Texans are being run, all of that has to be a possibility, even if it further poisons the well.

Nothing saying that Watson can't sit out 10 games, come back (like Williams from WASH) claim some other injury and still get a season accrued in regards to FA.

It is going to be ugly either way. Depending on how much you hate the Texans/the racist owner, maybe for pleasure.
