True that. He was a bit Bondsian in that first half, at least the homer pace .. .so why throw him a strike? He's still going with the XBHs though. Still a good shot at a 50/40 homer-double/triple season. Shot at 100 XBHs. Looks like there has only been about 15 of those in history, only a handful of them modern (most of them dramatically park aided).

The two best players in MLB over the last 10 years:

Trout and Kershaw?? Cabrera? Who else?

Cabrera has been garbage for 5 years

2010s top WAR (article below published in 2019 so not complete for the decade):
Mike Trout, 64.3
Robinson Cano, 53.8
Adrian Beltre, 51.1
Joey Votto, 50.6

From: https://www.latimes.com/sports/mlb/l...405-story.html

So Kershaw or Scherzer is likely the answer along with Trout.

Well, we're in August and Ohtani has 16 games started as pitcher with one loss. That's pretty good.

(In May he had 4 starts, about a 2.4 ERA, gave up 6 runs all month, 13 hits all month ... he went 0-1 and the Angels lost every game.)

This guy should be battling for Cy Young and 50 homers.

obviously which is why i mentioned the last 5.

pretty hard for someone to be the best player for 10 years when they were worthless for half of it.

I was being facetious a bit. See Ruth, Bonds, Ted Williams, Tom Watson, Koufax, Tiger, etc. There is such a thing as dominance to the point where it averages out even into the zero years as still awesome. Miggy had that.

He's 36th in fWAR over the last 10 seasons including this one. His peak decade was 2005-2014, so 7 years ago at this point.

Last 10 years it's Trout in a landslide, then Scherzer/Kershaw/Posey/Votto in the next tier.

The Padres are donezo. They've been playing ~.500 ball for 2 months and their starting rotation has been awful outside of Musgrove. No way they're catching SF or LA and Cincy has a pretty easy schedule going forward so will likely catch them for the 2nd wildcard.

SD plays 19 more games against LA/SF. They did fairly well against those teams earlier in the season so I guess there's still a glimmer of hope but if they keep splitting series with the likes of Colorado and Atlanta they're cooked.

I just read about him. He had a rather distinguished career, I couldn't have told you that name belonged to a baseball player yesterday.

Started an ASG, had 313 Ks one season. Number likely retired by the Astros, there were a few there I didn't recognize when I was at the park.

His career came to an end at age 30, when he suffered a stroke during pregame warmups. Real Shitty.

As a Royals fan wouldn't you like Hosmer, for lucking into WS and what not? If he would have signed again with the Royals it would have ****ed the team for another 20 years.

Cosign all of this. I am usually pretty good about knowing old baseball players but he somehow never hit my radar.

Had almost the same HOF % as Johan Santana did.

I remember Richards from when I was a kid. He and Nolan Ryan were my two favorite pitchers, aided by the fact that my little league team was the Astros (baby blue and white unis, wtf?). I remember when his career ended even though I didn't really grasp the severity and unusual nature of a stroke in someone so young, I just knew that something happened to him that put him in the hospital. Very sad.
