His swing is why he can strike out so much and maintain a respectable batting average. His non-HR contact becomes a lot of hard-hit singles.

Contrast this with Gallo who swings with a massive uppercut. His batting average sucks because he hardly gets any hits that aren't homeruns. Both of them strike out a lot but Stanton's babip is far superior because Stanton is so strong he doesn't need to sell out for power and can swing level through the zone.

The Yankees try to buy their way to the top, but have failed miserably recently and then whine about the Astros sign stealing while they were doing the same thing. They get off the hook because every MLB exec either grew up rooting for the Yankees or was employed by them. **** the Yankees.

Spoiler:
I'm a big liar when I have written 100 times that I'm done writing about this. I'll argue about this til the grave.

Frankie Lindor: $22.3M in salary - .228/.322/.402 (2.5 WAR)
Ahmed Rosario: $2.4M in salary - .278/.314/.401 (2.2 WAR)

That is before A Rosario had his 6th four hit game of the season today, including a 2B and HR.

Certainly Frankie is the better player but sort of a wash for 2021. Never saw that coming when the trade happened.

Nobody with 200 hits in a non-abbreviated season is semi-rare, a handful of times the last 50 years. Lowest MLB leading batting average ever for qualifiers I think is .329 and that looks to fall. Maybe .270 is the new .300.

Carl Yastrzemski won the AL batting title at .301 in 1968. That is the lowest. Next year they lowered the mound in all ballparks.

During the 2019 World Series, I wrote a post about how Verlander and Cole were attacking Juan Soto with high fastballs because that was the only place where he would occasionally expand the zone. I guess Soto has solved that problem. According to this Fangraphs article, Soto has seen 174 high fastballs this year that were outside the zone. He hasn't swung at a single one. That's unfathomable.

don't think the Braves can go with Will Smith in the playoffs - has to be worst closer on playoff teams

Giancarlo had 83 RBI 4 games ago. Now it's 96.

Reminds me of A-Rod in 2009 when he missed April due to injury. He went into the final game of the season in Tampa with 93 RBI. He hit a 3-run HR and a grand slam to finish with 100 RBI, then carried that hot streak for the entire postseason.

The Soto high fastball stat is beyond unreal.

That is amazing by Soto - but the other piece would be how often is he going after high pitches that are strikes. If he's hitting a lot of those, that would be really elite.

From the same Fangraphs article:

Quote:
You could post impressive patience numbers on high pitches by simply not swinging. So let’s take the next cut down, fastballs that Baseball Savant classifies as in the shadow zone but also in the regulation strike zone — pitchers’ pitches, in other words, that dot the edge of the plate:

There, too, Soto is selective — but far less so, swinging at 53% of the pitches he sees (the league average is 67.5%). He goes from phenomenally patient to only slightly below average, such is his understanding of when it’s time to let it fly.

Only, that misstates it. When Soto sees one of these borderline fastballs with two strikes, he swings — literally 100% of the time so far this year. They’re still tough pitches to hit, so he’s sparing with fewer than two strikes, preferring to take a strike — but don’t try to throw anything by him up high with two strikes. Miss, and he’ll take it. Hit the zone, and he’ll swing — a miserable situation for anyone trying to get him out.
According to the same article, Soto has the lowest swing rate in baseball, and the 14th lowest swing rate on pitches in the strike zone. But with runners in scoring position and first base open, his swing rate on pitches in the strike zone increases by 13.6% to a level that is above league average. The guy just has once in a generation control of the strike zone. There is no other way to put it. Every conceivable angle on the data reinforces the point.

I don't know how to post videos, but please do yourself a favor and see the highlight of Luis Robert's 2nd HR tonight. Some of the most beautiful contact I've ever seen. He has been so good since returning from injury.

If he stays healthy, there's a good shot he and Soto are 1,2 players of the decade.
