If it wasn't for the 100+ year database of stats, baseball would be so much less interesting.

Agreed. Not like it's 2021 or anything. Nope, it's not 2021 and we don't have the technology to do it.

Billy Butler made me think of Brett Butler. He is someone who I thought was overrated as a kid but looking back at his numbers looks like he might have been underrated.

Brett Butler was the ultimate small ball player. It was fun to watch. I think he's the best bunter in my lifetime.

But he was really convinced that he was a great base stealer, when really he wasn't. Some of those CS numbers are astounding. Probably would've scored more runs in his career if he just stayed put.

And while we're at it, his 2b/3b ratio was 277/131!

He lived across the street from a deli I worked at during high school. I got to know his hot nanny and he would hook me up with Indians tickets. Not like anybody else cared about late-1980s Cleveland baseball. Sweet seats though.

That's cool. I read his (auto?)biography when I was in high school.

Almost 50 bWAR! Never woulda guessed. Those caught stealing numbers are pretty lol.

Also, his 277/131 3b/2b ratio reminds of something I remember about him more than any other player. Because he wasn't actually that fast. He hustled and was decently fast. But he got so many triples because outfields played so shallow against him, shallower than I can remember for any other player.

And this slowroll is legit. Never seen anything like it.

Somehow Matt Stairs had 3 triples in a season at age 36.

Also, for a guy nicknamed "Pudge", 51 career triples is pretty impressive for a catcher.

Barry Bonds won back to back MVPs in 1992 and 1993. Before that time, there had been nine back to back MVP winners -- one at each IF position (including pitcher and catcher) and three OFs. All nine players won exactly two MVPs in a row. Submit your list without looking and I'll tell you how many you got right.

At no point in his career was Butler an effective base stealer. In other words, he wasn't a guy who had a high success rate early in his career and then started getting caught a lot later in his career. His success rate was terrible early in his career.

To his credit, Butler was incredibly skilled at drawing walks for a guy with no power.

My guesses
Spoiler:

Johnny Bench
Lou Gehrig
Joe Morgan
Mike Schmidt
Dale Murphy

Those are my good answers, rest are guesses. Probably don’t even have the right positions total.
Willie Mays
Sandy Koufax
Ralph Kiner
Pee Wee Reese - this is worse guess of all as I can’t think of a shortstop

Hint: They didn't allow the same person to win another MVP until some time in the 1930s. That is why we had some strange MVP winners in the 20s over Babe Ruth not getting any votes.
