For example, Josh Beckett was drafted #2 in '99 from the Houston area and was then considered one of the best high-school pitching prospects ever. He was considered by many to be the best high school player in the nation and was only drafted #2 because of perceived arrogance, demand for a major-league contract and another can't-miss prospect in the draft, Josh Hamilton. He threw around 95, topping at around 97 (there were also unconfirmed reports that he had once hit 99 the previous year, but major league scouts pegged his fastball at mid-90's). His fastball velocity alone was a huge deal.
