In my high school days, late 90s, multiple HS guys were hitting 100 in my area. Some are names you know, some never went past juco.

Pitching 100, run and gunning 100, or just "omg that was so fast it must have been 100?" Pitching 100 as a high schooler would've made you a huge deal back then. There was no reason for anyone that can pitch 100MPH to go to juco when you can get drafted in the first round and cash a big signing bonus. It was a pretty big deal back then to even throw 95 in high school. Kerry Wood was drafted out of high school throwing 95 and a lot of scouts thought he was a once-in-a-decade type of talent.

+1

I pitched in HS in the early 90's and there was nobody throwing 100 or even close to it, and I played in the meca of baseball in southern CA.

With all the data out there there must be a stat for what the average MLB fastball is now compared to 10, 20, 30 years ago, etc. Would be interesting to see, and how hitters coming in 20 years ago, now aging and the game speeding up, can still hang. But just the raw numbers is the important thing.

I give Roberts credit for nothing but Knebel opening for Urias might be the smartest thing he’s ever done

I was asking exactly what it was that was happening. Which pitcher was actually throwing 100 in high school in the 90's and ended up flaming out the juco level?

For example, Josh Beckett was drafted #2 in '99 from the Houston area and was then considered one of the best high-school pitching prospects ever. He was considered by many to be the best high school player in the nation and was only drafted #2 because of perceived arrogance, demand for a major-league contract and another can't-miss prospect in the draft, Josh Hamilton. He threw around 95, topping at around 97 (there were also unconfirmed reports that he had once hit 99 the previous year, but major league scouts pegged his fastball at mid-90's). His fastball velocity alone was a huge deal.

Webb has that optical illusion movement like Greg Maddux had on some pitches. Of course I know it doesn't really curve. Those phsycisits proved that with that study a while back. But still it fools you.

There is a big difference in radar guns esp at the lower levels, at least there was years ago when I played. Probably already been covered.

All these teams manufacturing runs in the postseason makes it even more painful to be a K or wait for a HR Yankee fan
