Reading some comments from the WSJ on this topic is pretty interesting - this is kind of a summary..

If you change the Redskins, then what about the Indians? Braves?

Where do you draw the line? How about Fighting Irish, Vikings and Celtics?

What about the state of Indiana??

It seems like the biggest beef with the Indians, Braves & Chiefs has been the mascots and/or rituals (beating a drum, tomahawk chop/chant, etc.). If it wasn't for those things, there probably wouldn't have been so much furor over the names.

I haven't paid any attention to rumors about new names for the Redskins, but they're basically owned by FedEx soooo Washington Express?

Also, lol deflategate. I live in Las Vegas & the 1st "cold" night of the year my car tells me my tires are low on air. Couldn't imagine that same effect possibly impacting a football.

You can't really do much other than facepalm the Patriots for the dumbazz Bengals thing, though.

The Cam thing should be fun. Hopefully Stidham beats him out tho

Is it native Americans themselves that have raised the issue? I understand the sentiment of why it is viewed as portraying them in a negative light but it could also be viewed the opposite. That they are/were fierce in battle and its intimidating. A compliment so to speak. I dont feel one way or the other about it, if native Americans themselves are raising an issue about it, by all means they need to change it.

I've only heard complaints about the Tomahawk chop, not the name Chiefs. I think the problem is finding any kind of consensus. IIRC even the Redskins found (paid?) some native American group somewhere who said they were fine with the name.

Obviously we've always known the name Chiefs wasn't in jeopardy as long as Redskins was still in existence. The discussion of changing the Chiefs name on Chiefsplanet is surprisingly measured for the moment. But I'm sure all it will take is one Trump tweet and half the forum will blow up in defense of the name.

Wining a SB and having Mahomes has led to a very placid fanbase at the moment. I stopped seeing my therapist in Feb. after 10 years. It's absolutely stupid how much that SB win improved my general disposition. I'm sure most die-hard Chiefs fans had a similar phenomenon - not that it will last forver.

Couldn't do it if I tried. I tried to become fans of various SF and LA teams since I've lived out here - Clippers, Giants, Angels, USC, even Mighty Ducks. I was sort of happy when they won, but I didn't give a crap if they lost. You can't manufacture that level of caring.

I mean, when denver won in 16 I was happy, but not like 97 and 98 cause i was a kid. It was a good day and the next but after that it was like "cool, wonder what they'll do in the offseason" . Def didnt affect my overall mood

Maybe it was just the lack of having to replay the latest surreally-painful playoff debacle in my head every 5 minutes for months.

lol when Pack won in '96 it made me no longer a fan of any team bc I felt nothing and was preoccupied with everyone else then thinking I was a poser for being a fan of GB.

Different strokes for different folks (or for winning a title as a teenage fan of a team that has nothing to do with where you live - was a fan bc I picked a team that sucked in tecmo sb a couple years prior).

Personally, I'd be fine if we got rid of Indiana.

I will say there's a flip side to this.

After 28-3, I am permanently more cynical and pessimistic than I've ever been.

Before that there was a light that helped me see the good in people.

Now it's gone forever... I distrust anyone and everything that could ever bring me joy, because at its core, I'm just going to be let down again.

My disposition has transitioned into seeing sports as all meaningless randomness. Like 75% of football games can be changed by who recovers one fumble or a single penalty that gets called or not.

All I can get into now is red zone for fantasy.
