It's better to consider transfers as a % of revenue, which if you do, transfers like Penaldo, Buffon, or even Rio to United are much bigger than many of those we see today.

Yeah looking back the prices paid in Italy around the turn of the century almost look more ridiculous than what's happening today, because transfer fees didn't really seem to rise much in the mid 00s. IIRC Dortmund buying Amoroso for 25m Euros in 2001 was the biggest fee paid by a German team until Ribery. Now it's

Spoiler:
Draxler to Wolfsburg, lol

Yah, if we use Denis Law, he was >60% of the turn over when he was signed.

Today that'd be >350m

Pogba at £89m in 2016 is almost the exact same as Rooney in 2004 <20%

I'd be curious to know what is sustainable as transfers are usually paid over a 5 year period

The whole transfer fee wage thing has always just been so weird to me.

So much money just to release a player from a contract, why don't players wait for a free and take that money for themselves?

If the concern is affecting the wage dynamics of the squad why not just give de Ligt a 50m signing bonus or something

And to be clear I don't think it's lame of him choosing Paris over United, I just think it's lame and a bit cowardly to choose Paris. If he chose Arsenal I'd still be shamed but I wouldn't view that as lame. The only challenge at Paris would be the challenge of continuing to improve and not letting the money get to your head while playing against milkmen

The kid has to live tho, playing in the PL is fine but between games you're in ****in england most of the time, some are even stuck in Manchester or Liverpool.

Lol at Hazard being greeted with QUEREMOS M'BAPPE, them Real fans have descent taste i must admit.

I mean sure, but what insanely talented 20 year old wouldn’t make that move? Also, what do we have to offer him right now? He isn’t getting CL football and the team is rudderless and somewhat haphazard. Maybe in a few years where it may finally look like we’re back on the up would he want to join from PSG, but that’s a big, fat maybe

In all fairness, Dennis Law probably didn't get paid whatever the equivalent was of 300 large a week back then.

Manchester (and Liverpool) isn't even that bad, weather isn't the best. Okay it's not London but it's not as if these guys can't fly down to London or even Paris in a couple of hours at the drop of a hat as well if required.

Doesn't Benitezs family still live in Liverpool, i'm sure i read/heard he travels across every day.

People are reading way to much into the location. Money is the biggest factor by a significant amount, location, weather or even club (unless it's Real Madrid) doesn't matter really.

Countless players have moved to China, Russia, Japan, Qatar etc etc

Neymar who was one of the first on the team sheet moved from Barcalona to PSG ffs

I don't mean to be flippant, but any good agent will be a) trying to get their players as much money as possible (obvs) and b) trying to reduce the variance to some extent considering all the potential pitfalls - injury, loss of form etc.

More players should roll the dice, but in the same situation, if I was earning good money, I'd probably jump that the opportunity to earn never-have-to-work-again money, even if I was being a bit of a ninny.

Yeah I understand from the player's standpoint about wanting security it's more so that it seems like clubs should be more keen to adopting a "**** the transfer fees, sign with us for free and we'll give you ****loads" policy. Obviously easier said than done, and I get that players still receive %s of the fees, it's just still hard to get my head around the whole transfer warchest stuff which is only a thing in soccer. It's not like I'm a noob, I'm a GOAT FM player.

Obviously Alexis is one of the WOAT signings, but they paid like 40 million to release him from a 6 month contract. WTF is that ****

de Jong is getting 10-12m at Barcelona, so that amount for de Ligt can't be too far fetched and anyway, anything over say 7-8m for a 20 year old who hasn't proved anything is ridiculous, let alone 15m+.
