NHL needs to go back to Conference seeding 1 vs 8, etc. The wild card format is ok, but once the WCs are determined then seed all 8 teams by points...

as awful as the format is for pretty much everyone, Tampa has an insane Cup route too

They should have gone pure divisional and ditched the wild card entirely. That would make for the most epic playoff matchups and long-term rivalries which was the intent of the change.

But they didn't want to deal with the whining from the team that got an "unfairly" difficult draw so they compromised.

And now they have the worst of both worlds.

interestingly enough if you assume the 2nd division winner is the #2 seed regardless of record, all of the West and half of the East matchups would be the same

Totally agree. Think the Avs are going to get rolled. Definitely the one favorite I would bet, and honestly, they are probably the best value on that board. I feel like they win that series at least 4 out of 5 times, and there's no way I can really say that about anyone else.

Is there a way to reward regular season performance more without making divisions even more important? 82 games is such a crawl and in the end, the standings ~don't matter. But if you give out byes, it likely just unfairly rewards teams in crap divions.

Also, 1v8 please- rivalries blow. Playing the same teams in the playoffs every year gets old after approximately two seasons.

Agreed. The system should be amended to have a ~1500 point team comprised of all the other playoff teams face Tampa. It's the only fair system, since Tampa is guaranteed to CUP

Never happening. Someone suggested it at the GM meetings and about 2 liked it. Many laughed. Too grueling of a sport and now you’re gonna waste additional days in what is already a long season.
