I used to somewhat be in that camp, but you are wrong. There are ways to set up golf courses so that they tend to determine who the best players are. There have certainly been fluke winners in every major, but the cream rises to the top, and all players know the rules going in, and all agree that the majors determine greatness.
It is unfortunate for someone like Greg Norman, whom by all other measures would be one of the all time greats, and it is very fortunate for Nick Faldo, who lucked into many majors, including the ones that propelled him past Greg Norman before he delivered the knockout punch to Greg at the 96 Masters.
Faldo was known as El Foldo in the British press. He was also terrible with the media, and hated by the fans for his boring style of play. His conservative style had him close enough in the big events that he was able to capitalize when others collapsed, kinda like a poor man's, boring Jack Nicklaus.
Throw in a broadcasting career that totally changed people's perception of him, and Nick Faldo gets the prize for most blessed golfer of all time. That career as an announcer is getting quite long in the tooth, as Faldo never did offer great insight, it's just that he was known as the most boring and uninteresting man on the planet before that, so he became a pleasant surprise in the booth. The contrast helped.
