Well, in less than 24 hours the big event will kick off. You know how it is, Roger Goodell will get booed every time he takes the stage, a Jets fan will yell "OH NO" at the announcement of a Jets pick, and someone will make a hilarious trade up that leaves everyone scratching their heads.
The big stories of the night:
Will the Cardinals take Kyler Murray #1 overall, or will they ride it out with Josh Rosen?
Rosen didn't have a good rookie year, but he was also playing in the worst offense in the league by both supporting talent and (especially) coaches. He still has the tools to come back IMO; Jared Goff came back from an even worse rookie season and I think Rosen is a better prospect. HOWEVER, Murray could potentially be a generational star; he broke the adjusted yards per attempt record in the NCAA last year (after it was consecutively broken by Baker Mayfield). If the Cards believe that, they might have to take him.
The insider information has been all over the place; earlier this week Murray was -1000 odds to be the #1 pick; that's dropped to -350 or so. (And remember, Sam Darnold was the favorite to go #1 last year until the day of the draft.) A new, late rumor has the Cardinals targeting Quinnen Williams with the #1 pick.
Who else wants the other QBs?
The Giants have been alternately rumored to have interest in Daniel Jones or Dwayne Haskins; so naturally, today, the rumor has come in that Daniel Snyder has taken over Washington's draft room and wants to move into the top 5 for a QB-- either Jones or Haskins. This promises to be hilarious no matter the result. (For the record, I think Haskins is a good prospect and Jones is not so much.)
Drew Lock is the other name expected to go in the first, and no one's clear who really likes him yet. The Broncos at 10 are a popular rumor.
Other potentially interested teams: Miami at 13 has the least-settled QB situation of any team in the league. Cincinnati, with a new coach and Andy Dalton never having gotten over the hump in eight years, might be looking for a new guy.
Sleeper day-2 guy who could be better than some of the day-1 guys: Will Grier. Sleeper day-3 guy who could be a starter someday: Brett Rypien. Tyree Jackson is a fascinating prospect as a giant athlete with a cannon arm.
This is the draft for defensive linemen.
A ridiculous crop of first-round talent in this draft, from DE Nick Bosa, who probably doesn't make it past #2; to should-be top 5 DTs Ed Oliver and Q. Williams; to Clemson's three stars, end Clelin Ferrell and tackles Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence; to top edge athletes Brian Burns and Montez Sweat; to the guy a lot of people think is the best edge rusher in this draft, Josh Allen; to Michigan's Rashan Gary; to DTs whose star is on the rise and could sneak into the back of round 1 in Jeffery Simmons and Jerry Tillery.
Also the draft for tight ends.
Whether you like seam receiver Noah Fant or do-everything T.J. Hockenson, Iowa has a tight end you'll like. Irv Smith Jr. is widely regarded as the next-best overall tight end, and Jace Sternberger as the next-best slot-receiver type tight end. After that you have a mix of "potentially under-utilized in college" guys like Dawson Knox, Foster Moreau, and Kahale Warring. Could be a TE class comparable to 2017.
This WR class could be like 2008: A logjam in the second round; nobody in the first.
Who's your favorite WR in this class? One of the Ole Miss guys, leading receiver A.J. Brown or stupefyingly freakish athlete D.K. Metcalf? Undersized deep burner Marquise Brown? Gigantic and smooth Hakeem Butler? Or contested-catch master N'Keal Harry? Opinions vary, but rumor has it that Brown is the only one NFL teams consider a lock to go in the first round. There's a deep second tier here, too, with guys like Miles Boykin, Deebo Samuel, Emanuel Hall, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Kelvin Harmon, Andy Isabella, and two sets of teammates, Ohio State's Parris Campbell and Terry McLaurin, and Georgia's Riley Ridley and Mecole Hardman. (Hell, Ole Miss has a
third receiver expected to be drafted, DaMarkus Lodge.)
The RB class could also be like the 2008 WR class.
Josh Jacobs of Alabama seems to have become the consensus top back in the class and a likely late first-rounder (25 to Philadelphia is a popular projection). His teammate Damien Harris falls into that large group of players that could go anywhere on day 2 or slip into rounds four or five, a list that includes Darrell Henderson, David Montgomery, Miles Sanders, Rodney Anderson, Justice Hill, and Devin Singletary. There's a pretty good third tier too-- Bryce Love is the most recognizable name, but guys like Benny Snell, Mike Weber, Trayveon Williams, and Elijah Holyfield could be valuable NFL contributors as well. My sleeper here: Boise State's Alexander Mattison (currently ranked a ludicrous #295 on CBS Sports' rankings).
I don't have much to say about the OL, but there are a lot of potential day-one guys.
Andre Dillard is the best pass blocker. Jonah Williams is probably the best overall tackle. Jawaan Taylor hopefully has the talent to outdo them both. Cody Ford is a beast who might play tackle or guard. Garrett Bradbury and Chase Lindstrom are potential first-round interior guys. Kaleb McGary and Dalton Risner might sneak into round one, too. You'll see a lot of day-two guys as well.
I didn't feel like writing much about the other positions. LB basically has one elite prospect and one good one and then it tails off quickly. CB is kind of unfocused with only two guys considered sure first-rounders, and then a lot of day-two based on personal preference guys. A couple of safeties could sneak into the first round but I don't know who's actually good. Anyone who knows more about the back seven of the defense feel free to have at.
Round one kicks off at 8 PM EDT.
