I think the Jets might be fine, but Chevy is on a bit of a gamble. I think to fit everything under the salary cap he needed to have a young defence, and he saw four or five guys who could be NHL defencemen this year.
But he couldn’t have expected to drop 6 defencemen. Trouba, Myers, Chiarot, Byfuglien, Morrissey, Kulikov [and Morrow, too]. Was Chiarot expected to leave? 3.5 seems about right. but too much for the Jets?
There have been a lot of guys developed next to Buff over the last few years. If you were to take each of the young guys one at a time and give them a month there, you might have something by the end of the year.
I hoped Byfuglien was in Europe trying to beg Enstrom to come back. Or maybe it is just a way to get some cap room. Or maybe he wants out. Or maybe he wants to fish. Maybe it’s harder to get the young guys to listen when Buff does what he does [you can see guys holding the point way more than they should].
I was at the old timers game at the Heritage Classic, there was a really old-timer named Ford who played a lot of minutes and was very effective. He had a perfect gap and would reach a long way out with his stick and pop the puck away. That was nicest thing I saw Bitetto do in the preseason. He seemed to freeze against Crosby during the first period last night if Crosby was within a few feet of him. My recording didn’t work, so I haven’t seen the rest of the game. He needs to play like it’s the preseason.
