How good is Luka Doncic going to be? What will his numbers look like year one? 16/7/5?

From ESPN before the draft:

Quote:
2. Luka Doncic, Sacramento Kings

Fantasy take: Doncic is a bit of a mystery because he has developed and played overseas. However, he is considered highly polished, has excellent size for a potential point guard and has both great passing and solid shooting potential in addition to the rebounds that his size might allow. On the right team, as a starting point guard, he has the ability to put up strong all-around numbers immediately. The Kings have their point guard of the future in De'Aaron Fox, but he has been more comfortable scoring than setting the table, so Doncic may still get to play quite a bit of lead guard.

Rookie projection: 16.8 PPG (45.6 FG%, 83.8 FT%), 1.4 3PG, 5.3 APG, 6.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 3.1 TPG

I’m more interested to see how he looks defensively. Who he guards, how he rebounds (and pushes transition off rebounds), how well he rotates (deflections/shots challenged/stocks).

Those projections for Luka seems about right considering he will be a secondary ball handler & playmaker in his first year, 16-6-5 sounds about right. I think he will be better defensively then people think, the Hedo-Turkolu comparisons that some people are bringing up is bizarre, he's way more athletic & i think he will even have some highlight dunks in his first year, he already said he plans on dunking on Porzingis in year 1 .

16/5/6 is pretty good for a rookie.

I can't imagine a lot of rookies average that.

I think his assist #s will be a mystery since they don't count assists over in Europe

Doncic is elite at rebounding for his size. I watched 10-15 games of Doncic, he really battles hard and get a lot of rebound in the middle of taller guys. I think he'll be between 6-8 per game without triple double bitching

He's great at pushing the ball on transition

Also don't be fooled by his witheness, he's a truck (not athletic like Lebron, but strong) and goes hard on bigger guys.

Blocks I've seen from him are mostly on a player driving on him and he stick with him then blocks the ball. He has quick hands and again steals I've seen from him were mostly real steals and not gambling on passsing lanes

Floor is slightly positive on defense, great on offense, ceiling is best player of his generation

To compare with something you know.

Ginobili won euroleague title and MVP at 24, Doncic won it at 19 and he dominated the field way more than Ginobili did, and the level in Europe has increased since 2001

Nobody could believe in Ginobili's body just like nobody believe Doncic has a real body. But the thing is quite simple, if they dominate the Euroleague attacking the rim and leading the pick&roll they obviously have a better body than other random white euros.

Will they compete with Russ West athleticism ? Of course no, but they are both above average NBA athlete, you can't put that as a weakness on them

Ginobili became a top ~25-35 player for multiple season, Doncic is better, 5 years younger and has a better body that is never ever failing the NBA

is Nerlens Noel actually gonna sign an MLE type deal? Seems pretty silly to me that he'd be worth 4/70 12 months ago and now everyone thinks he's a bargain option. I get that he had a pretty bad year last year, but he's young and has been decent in the past.

He's a cancer and the one team that wanted to pay him, he refused to take their deal. My friend has worked with him with the Sixers, Noel literally thinks he's the best player ITL and incredibly stupid. There's a reason most teams don't want to pay him and it's little about his skill and all about his intelligence/attitude.

Guivre,
I’m well aware of Doncic’s Euro profile having read dozens of articles, watched several of his games, and seen a million highlight videos.

I’m curious to see how he translates to NBA median athleticism, which absolutely buries Europe. Also, not sure whether his limited athletic profile will allow him to improve much; Ginóbili is a high-level NBA athlete from lateral quickness to vertical explosion.

I'm always skeptical of any rookie prospect, but from the limited amount of full games and highlights, I think his athleticism is underrated. I wouldn't call it his greatest strength, but I don't think it's an actual weakness. I remember Harden getting bagged on coming out of college because of his lack of athleticism. But he's super athletic, it's just not particularly vertical.

I think the real key to him becoming a superstar is going to be whether or not his handles develop so that he is more of a penetrating threat and if he can knock down threes at an elite level.

I remember the same being said about Stauskas. How he's going to be able to run point too.

Hezonja's hype was similar. He could be the real deal, no way to know until we see him against actual athletes. He doesn't have Hedo's height fwiw.

Dipo did drop to 13 PER from 16 in ORL though so as someone else mentioned, he might not have won the award if he went to a 20 PER like he could have from year 4 to 5. Dipo's MPG only jumped 1 mpg yet his ppg near 7 ppg.

JB went from 10 PER to 13 PER at 54% TS% To 56% and his usage just jumped 18 to 21%. JB was better in the playoffs but that's outside this awards scope.

Seems like a strawman as MrAdvantage didn’t say he should have won the award. Of course Dipo deserved to win.

Borderline superstar did make me lol though. Brown still has some very spazzy tendencies and thinks he can jump 3 inches higher than he really can.

But like Dwight Howard is a cancer and signed for 3/70 at age 30 on the obvious decline and with a history of back problems.

Dwight is a lot more talented, Dwight also didn't turn down a ton of money to get a prove it deal and then still be an ass and not prove anything. Noel is just stupid. Also there are people who are Dwight fans and will pay money to see him. Don't think there are as many people who will do that for Noel.

But those guys were okay in their previous stop. Super Mario was a bench guy who was a bit erratic, Doncic was the MVP.

I think Luka's floor is just incredibly high.

Also 538 came out with their CARMELO projections..

Normally I’m reverent about everything that Phil Jackson has to say about basketball. (His Eastern philosophy is a whole other story.) But on the Dan Patrick show, the Zen Master said that if he were building a team from scratch, he would pick Dwight Howard over LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Paul. Can’t say I agree with him this time. Phil’s argument, which you can listen to here, is that it’s really rare that a team is vaulted into “championship territory” by a two-guard or a small forward. He takes Dwight Howard because he’s a big guy, and traditionally that would be a good decision.
We should've all seen the Prez of Knicks debacle coming. I for one was like WTF NO @ the Joakim Noah signing.

Sure the crowd loves it when Lance gets in the game, but winning is fun too.
He's always been a bad shooter, but he has excellent vision, good handles, is strong, and plays hard at all times. And I'm not normally the guy to care about such things, but the team (the actual players, not fans) does seem to get a surge of energy when Lance checks in, especially at home, according to my eye test. With that said I do admit that he's not a positive NBA player a lot of the time.

I've been a fan of his since his first Summer League, he is a rather unique player.

they have plenty of ok guards and Oladipo, so losing Lance is never going to be a huge deal from a team perspective, but I do think he's worth more than 4m to Indiana specifically

After listening to both parts of the Dunc'd on pod, it is quite clear that no one is getting paid anything this off-season.
