I don't think you know what duplicitous means.
I think the Celtics just want to go with insane switchable wing depth, so they want to have three wings on the bench behind Hayward/Tatum/Brown who are good enough to see the floor against Golden State.
I'm not sure if Grayson Allen is a fit. If he can be a decent three-point shooter who is a willing and intelligent defender and has enough athleticism to be stay on the floor, then he has value. Get a guy who is much more athletic but doesn't have a good defensive motor and makes stupid plays, and someone like Allen probably ends up ahead of him on Stevens' depth chart.
People tend to view roster construction in terms of who is needed if everyone is healthy. I think that is a bad assumption and the goal should be to build a roster that can weather a few key injuries in the playoffs. Keeping Marcus Smart makes sense for the Celtics, so long as his contract isn't crazy and they can move him in a few years or if it is a shorter contract and they can let him walk if they groom the next man up at his position.
