Smart 4/52

Maybe I overrate him but he is an elite defender that can cover 4 positions and I still have hope he can turn into a decent shooter on an elite team. With Brown/Tatum making leaps and Kyrie/Hayward back, Celts are going to be able to get him better looks. Even PJ Tucker hits open corner 3s on Houston

Bit more than I figured he'd pay him, I'm happy for Smart tho.

Dude is going to keep working, paying competitive players probably has some extra value.

oh so siding with the most respected organization in all of the professional sports over the actions of a certifiable cretin is the same as hating on kneeling NFL players?

okay then

What if Kawhi kneeled at NBA Games to Oh Canada next season?

Would that help restore his image?

don't agree here. there's legitimate gripes to be had with kawhi. this isn't someone leaving in FA after honorably fulfilling their contract (katie and labron)

this was the consensus on Simmons' pod about the trade, if you want a good laugh

actually they didn't even really get into the Pop stuff so much, mostly about how good & underrated DDR is, how good a passer/playmaker he is, how he's not a terrible fit with LMA, how he's fine/good defensively, how the concerns about him being able to maintain/elevate his game in the playoffs aren't concerning, how this Spurs shooting coach is just gonna teach him how to shoot 3s and that's that, and how at 29yo he's just gonna keep improving each season forever

also called Kiwi a t3 player which i think is too strong, and then concluded that it could be a win-win trade, but probably not, UL Rapz

His takes were all hilariously terrible on that podcast.

He said that the Bucks didn't get better this offseason. They replaced one of the worst coaches in the NBA with a top 5-8 coach. He also said Jabari Parker was a huge loss for them. He was unquestionably a net negative last year.

Lastly, can we please stop acting like the Kyrie Irving trade was such a huge win for the Celtics? Irving is going to be playing on one leg next year and he might not even re-sign with the Celtics next summer. (Which is probably a blessing in disguise for the Celtics.)

I think the Marcus Smart contract is fine. I've given up trying to rate him, but there isn't any denying that the team just plays better when he's out there, whether or not it's his play or his energy being infectious I don't think it matters.

I don't think he passes the Nene test right now, but I also don't like using that to judge the value of a signing.

If Smart is worth $13mill/year then how much is Rozier worth to the Celtics?

His agent did a great job. I think he's overpaid but the Celtics needed him to defend Steph/Klay in a potential finals matchup and/or as a contract in a trade for a star.

Simmons pod was definitely terrible. DeRozan is apparently a top 12-13 player too???

Also the “maybe he just needs to get into the Spurs defensive culture” “maybe he’ll learn to shoot from Chip” stuff is a bit insulting to the Raps. I understand that the Spurs are the Spurs, but DeMar isn’t getting rescued from the Kings or Magic. He’s coming from a top 5 defense and a culture and org that’s shown itself to be good with player development etc. The general podcast conversation also implies that just having Pop and a great shooting coach makes trades magically better. If you get 70 cents on the dollar, but your coaching staff turns that 70 cents into a dollar it still doesn’t change the fact that it was a bad trade and that with a better trade your coaching staff could probably do even better.

He played crunch time in the All Star game - of course he is a top 12-13 player.

I'm fully supportive of all the NFL knee-takers, and Kry Leonard is at the same time the snakiest of snakes who quit on his team.

tell me more about how guys should sacrifice after seeing how IT2 played out

tru

ya they seemed to think that every team in the East got worse, which is like, maybe partly true, and part defense mechanism bc the Celtics didn't do anything

ya it's hugely insulting, and stupid

like he was with the Rapz for 9 seasons, improved every year basically, but they never came up with methods for improving his shooting? k

and i mean, is there even a precedent for a guy shooting 29% from 3 through age 29 and then getting good at it?

oh ya, forgot about that
he played crunch time minutes in the ASG (bc he was voted in as a starter), and was fairly poor
tremendous argument lol

He is going to be waived no matter what, so agreeing to a trade makes him look like someone who won't be a dick about the process. And maybe he gets more favorable buyout terms.

He fact that Kawhi is a #deplorable and Pop is one of the most outspoken trump critics makes this post worse than it already was.
