It's all well and good saying, oh they made £40m profit last year. Just blow the load on Bale transfer (5 year payments) and use the rest to pay his yearly wage.

That doesn't factor in having to pay everyone else. Spurs have increased their wage bill by 27% in the last financial year. Their wage bill is still less than half of what City and Uniteds are.

Even if they start paying their squad a similar rate to what Plop are paying - bare in mind that no player a plop earn nearly as much as what Bale does/would - again unless Real subsidise his wage.

Even if we forecast similar commercial growth, stadium revenue (although i'm not factoring in the NFL? or is that going to wembly?) and TV hasn't increase (finished runners up higher payout for these records). They'd be in the red of between £20-30m, have an wage bill to revenue ratio that is unstable.

They then have a stadium to pay for as well.
Again, I feel you're missing the point. The above analysis is correct and is the consideration of a fringe t4 challenging team that will lose their elite talent either way. If they want to win they will have to either get very lucky or take some substantial risks.

Fwiw, we should sign Martial instead of Bale.

Apparently, Poch wants the club to "invest" this summer in a way that we haven't done before. Players like Kovačić and Martial. Plus he wants all the first team to be given substantial wage hikes.

I think Poch has taken the club as far as he or any manager can without reaching a bit harder, and I don't think he'll stay beyond next season (and maybe not even that long) without a push from the club.

Will be very interesting to see how it plays out. I'm pretty sure Levy is happy with T4 every season with an outside chance of blinking a trophy. Poch and Kane won't be so passive in their ambitions.

That's quite a foolish argument as it highlights one example of a team dangerously living beyond their means. You can see examples in every sport (and business for that matter) of teams taking a short-term calculated risk for success.

It's fine if you'd rather prioritise long-term health, but you're admitting that you're Southampton.

Fwiw TV payout:-

City got £149.4m
United £149.7m
Spurs £144.4m

Last year

Chelsea £150.8
Spurs £145m
City £146.9

Champions league (last year)
Real Madrid £81m
Arsenal £65m
City £50m
Spurs £43m

Winning either or both competition would increase spurs revenue by £45m in a best case - CL can fluctuate if teams are knocked out early which allowed Juve to earn 110m.

Unless you genuinely and honestly think that by winning either of them Spurs would be able to capitalise and grow their commercial revenues by around 100m in order to pay these wages then by all means go for it.

2018 revenue (€):

United 676.3
City 527.7
Arsenal 487.6
Chelsea 428
Plop 424.2
Spurs 401 - (figure including winning both competitions)

Otherwise they're majorly in the red and that's not including them to have a positive net spend on players.

Then again Joe Lewis could just say **** it and pile his own money in!

What is the cost of not doing it though? If Poch and Kane leave, then that probably leaves us battling for 6th with Arsenal and Everton - at best.

Completely pointless spending £1bn on the new stadium if the team playing in it are ****.

No idea but as things stand it seems to me an absolute massive risk going for and paying someone like Bale what he's on. The club cannot afford to do it at this moment.

I couldn't find what Spurs are going to be paying per year to pay the stadium back.

I agree with you going for Martial is way better.

every team in the league is making sick profits and kingweed still thinks they'll turn into leeds or qpr if they spend a bit more money

Re: 2018 Football summer transfer window thread - AKA Levy GOAT

Mahrez shouldnt be taking mins from Bernardo as he came in last year to be Spanish Dave’s heir apparent. He should slot in for Silva as pep said that he can’t play as much next year due to age

Problem is where does gund fit into this because he got a lot of those minutes this year when Silva was out with his family. Bernardo in the middle > on the wing.

Transfer thread officially POPPIN’. Really curious to see where bale goes. If griez does indeed go to Barca. If hazard, salah stay put.

Pool have already have a sick window with naby

I agree Bale would be a dumb signing on the reported figures.

We could probably get Kovačić and Martial for the same money.

You just see profit and think OMG THEY CAN SPEND IT. THEY CAN BUY BALE.

What you're suggesting is because Spurs have made £40m and have a wages to turn over ratio of around 50%. They should go out and spend similar levels of wages to that of teams that have revenues of >100m more.

If Spurs had a similar wage bill to that of Plop their entire revenue would be gone.

Here is a graph to help.

Just to be clear now, all the money that spurs bring in in a year would be spent on wages.

You'd still expect them to sign player and have a net spent. They still have a stadium to pay for.

This is similar to your burnley thing where you think they should be spending money to rival clubs that bring in way more money than them.

what year is this?

spending 75-80% of revenue on wages is fine. the only one it would hurt is some billionaire expecting to make 100m a year from owning a football club

kane: "i want 300k a week. that's what im worth and you're paying bale 400k"
levy: "im sorry, but your contract gives you 100k a week the next 5 years. we'll give you another 40k if you sign over a 6th year and you can win the league here"
This seems correct to me, except if Kane can actually sue Spurs if they bring someone in for double his wage, but that seems far-fetched?

Kane already knows that he's worth five times he's making and Spurs can pay it, but when he demands that Levy will tell him to **** off because he's got a long term contract.

If they bring in Bale, Kane will continue to know that he's worth five times he's making and Spurs can pay it, but when he demands that Levy will tell him to **** off because he's got a long term contract.

That said, I don't think Bale is a great investment of his own.

So the theory is that right now Kane is content to be underpaid out of respect for spurs wage structure?

Most likely he's just a beta or his agent sucks or nobody is actually in for him

Re: 2018 Football summer transfer window thread - AKA Levy GOAT

on the bale to spuds thing, ive had similar thoughts at times: why doesn't team x, which was previously in a healthy financial position and now has all this lovely new TV money, spend mega huge on player y and really have a go at a title/top 4 trophy

but bale would be a £150-200m investment all told, with dubious upside wrt revenue growth. spuds are maybe worth £1.5bn. if they were in any other industry, this conversation would be laughably pointless. the investment is just not worth it. not even close to being close to worth it

football teams which operate as normal or near-normal businesses cannot entertain this sort of thing

Kane will sign a new contract before the world cup that is worth at least 150k pw - it's my lock of the week of the century

Bale is never gonna happen. Maybe if 75% of his compensation is stadium naming rights - "The Gareth Bale 11 of Hearts Stadium at White Hart Lane" has a nice ring to it.

The actual figure is quite important though. 150k p/w would still be massively under market rate. If it's 250 it still probably is but the difference may be small enough to make up for other factors (fav club/not wanting to uproot/being a big fish in a small pond).
