I think we have done well too (based mainly on what others have said), although I do think that there is a strong chance this is the Arnautovic money. We'll sell him at the end of the window and then fail to land a high profile replacement. "He wanted to go and we tried to sign x but there wasn't time" would be a standard Sullivan play when the transfer window closes.

The problem we face is that we are trying to undo several years of bad transfer dealings and poor management. This will take years. When we signed Payet, Kouyaté, Lanzini and Sakho I thought we had changed. Then we reverted to type and went with inspired choices like Snodgrass and Fonte. Supposedly the new manager has decided that the youth team should adopt the same tactics as the first team - this is hardly revolutionary, yet here we are in 2018 with a sixty-something year old telling us to change this.

If Arnautovic does go, he's going to take some replacing.

I don't really see why the youth teams should play the same tactics as the pros unless you're a club like Ajax which plays the same style for decades. Almost all teams chance tactics and/or managers every 2-3 years at least and often get someone in that is totally different from the guy they've just sacked. I'd think it'd be way more valuable to just try and make the youth players as good footballers as they can be, which includes tactical flexibility, instead of having them specialise in a certain way of playing.

The problem I guess is what sort of legal mess are you going to find yourself in the middle of with any of these Sporting guys, can you even register any of them?

You are probably right, but we're not very good at producing top flight footballers. We have just produced our first one in about a decade.

If we got £7m, I think that's not bad as he's in last year of his contract. Was no longer a certain starter for a few reasons, failure to commit may be the biggest reason though.
