To keep him, he apparently wants £45m over 5 years (parity with VVD). So, keeping him costs the club £120m - the £75m we'll forfeit in transfer fee, plus the cost of his new contract.
Considering we already bought his replacement last summer and has already slotted in very well, I think that money can be spent better elsewhere.
Finally, I don't think it send out any message - especially if Martial comes the other way. Poch and Kane have committed, and this improves the likelihood of most of the first team following suit.
