i wonder what would've been a smarter investment:

A) spending £120m to sign leo messi in 2005
B) spending £120m on early termination fees/signing bonuses for claudio ranieri, jose mourinho, avram grant, luiz felipe scolari, carlo ancelotti, avb, rdm, fsw, jose mourinho again, antonio conte, new guy

Maurizio Sarri is being reported everywhere. Hope he is as passionate as Conte

Tbh I thought Conte left pretty much right after the FA Cup.

Clubs are already back together training...must have been weird for him to be hanging around there.

Sarri is basically already at Chelsea. He and jorginho will be announced soon I would imagine

Seri to Fulham is rather ****ing weird

I guess best case scenario now is ndombele which won’t happen. Or kovacic which seems unlikely. They’re going to be rolling out 59 year old dinho for unlimited matches? Sick

for real though, spurs fans should riot over the club only paying 42% of turnover in wages. this should be the time to push on with a good young core of players and actually win stuff

Aren't most of those reports about 18 months behind the times/haven't Spurs resigned pretty much everyone in that time?

they are but im sure the income has grown a lot in that period too. maybe the number is a little higher/lower now, but it probably hasn't changed much

I get being fiscally conservative when you're paying for a new stadium. I also guess they have to keep a decent chunk in reserve for when Kane gets a proper agent who demands the market rate for him.

i get the stadium part a bit, but building a stadium isn't charity either. it's supposed to pay for itself through higher revenue otherwise they wouldn't have built it. so just borrow the money and pay it back with that new extra revenue when it opens

Well they will certainly be doing that. However, there are a lot of long-term things you can't predict. Spurs could be awful in 10 years and be a mid table championship team struggling to get 10,000 people into WHL. Or the TV bubble could dramatically burst in some way and clubs' income becomes a small % of what it used to be. Or, probably the most likely of the three, they might just run bad for a couple of years and not make the CL.

At any rate, I think being risk averse given the uncertainty is a pretty good move.

^^ Exactly

In addition, we've just stuck Kane on £200k a week, which is still cheap for him, but it does make in the best paid English player.

I expect Eriksen, Alli and a couple of others to get hiked up to £150kish, which compares favourably to anyone other than Mun or oil money.

Plus Trippier will probably want more than £35k after his WC.

I think we will sign someone for at least 40m before the window closes too

there are degrees of conservatism though. spending 55% of revenue on wages is still very conservative normally

i do agree that spurs are a strange case because the new stadium is so insanely expensive and it's hard to say what's really going on there

Stadium is obviously a big factor, but difficult to say exactly how much unless others have seen more info than me about financing strategy.

I think the big round of contracts we are doing now is probably another 10-15m easily to the wage bill too. That may not seem like a lot these days, but that is around 10% for us without even signing a new player.

If Daca were to run a bunch of football clubs, how quickly do you think they'd go pop?

Say Spurs were to ratchet it up and spend a bunch more, they aren't in a position even then to overtake City or United in pure spending. Along with the things you noted, it's just better (and smart) business for Spurs to take a long view on this (and as they have done for a good while) and make sure their house is in order before taking another leap in player spending.

Yeah, I think the calibre of player we go for at this point changes - We obviously need a couple of £60m+ players to help us improve, rather than 5-6 £20m players.

Stadium is a weird one - £850m is insanely expensive if that's what it's costing, but then it probably brings in somewhere between £50-100m in naming rights and additional revenue, so the numbers look like they stack up.

Spurs really do need to win a trophy though. I'm not sure if spending more increases their trophy equity much, but I think even an FA Cup would help Spurs fans look back at the Kane/Alli/Eriksen era with fondness, and if they don't win anything it'll be mostly regret because a great team blew their chances. Spurs won't be in danger of relegation or anything in a few years if things go awry so I think they should push all in now (within reasonable standards)
