As already demonstrated my knowledge is also ropey, but surely there are three potential outcomes at play here:
1) Red card + pen: if the ref initially thought that the defender did not make an honest attempt to play the ball
2) Yellow + pen: if the ref thinks he did make an honest attempt but still fouled
3) red + FK: outside the box but stopped a goal scoring opportunity
My understanding is that there isn't an option 4) for yellow + FK if the ref decides that he
did stop a goal scoring opportunity - i.e that part of the rule hasn't change.
Have I misunderstood?
